Gable/Apex Window Question

Hi All

We need your help please . .

The building of our side extension has begun. It’s only just
above the damp course at present, which is fortunate for us because we simply
cannot decide what the gable window above the garage should look like.

Using Sketchup Free we have cobbled up some drawings to
represent ideas that we have come up with so far, but would dearly like the opinions
and ideas of you guys.

Below, are our 4 attempts and also a blank for you to draw upon.

Any advice, comments, suggestions, ideas etc would be truly
appreciated.

Thanking you all in anticipation.

Regards Dawn

    Number 3. It stands out.

I would maximise the glass, 3 or 4, I would love a light flooded house

I like 3 or 2, but there have been quite a few questions on here about how to dress apex windows like this, so if that is a bedroom, you might want to think about your curtain / blind / shutter options at this stage as well.

I don’t like any of them because I don’t think they relate to the rest of your house or your neighbour.
I think you need to either make this extension subservient to your house and have no gable or at least mirror the proportions of the gable over your existing bay.

Depends on the use of the room and whether vaulted ceiling is desirable. And of course what the room is facing: Garden or street? For a bedroom, would go for your last suggestion. For lounge or staircase, number 3. If facing the Garden, then definitely go for gable window.

I think the gable window is out of proportion with the rest of the house. Although the conservative option, I think Jonathan's suggestion looks more natural in terms of proportions.

I do prefer the taller gable.

Number 3 is the best design and would make the house really stand out. I have a similar design.

The expanse of glazing in 3 would be good overlooking a garden but not a road. So many houses now do the "big window big light" thing that it is no longer special or unique. Jonathan or Carolina's suggestions look more appropriate.

I love the gable windows and have something similar to option 2 in my living room BUT this is rear facing, overlooking the garden and we are not overlooked so we have no need for any window treatments. If the gable window is facing a road and will be in a bedroom I would go with Carolina's advice and have a more conventional window that matches the existing windows. Otherwise, I think you could have problems finding curtains or blinds. Even if you do find them, I think they would ruin the effect you hope to achieve.

I like number three. I know it's different to others around it, but for me it works. I also like Jonathan's suggestion, but it looks as though you'd lose height with that version. It does sit well on the house and alongside next door however.

From a practical point of view, if the room is a bedroom, and proportionally from the outside I’d say Carolina’s is the best suggestion. This will not be too noisy, too hot, too bright and will be easy to curtain if this is a room you need to sleep in

I LOVE the third option, we have a job with a similar window which could give you more of an idea what it will end up like :)

I think 3 or 4 are best - although being a blinds company specialising in shaped blinds, I would recommend a central mullion as this will hide the light gap between two shaped blinds or curtains. There are plenty of shading options though...our solutions are all designed to be as discreet as possible to show off the design of the window.
