Principles of Design by Katherine Guerrero
Unity in design means that all parts of a design are related by one idea. This interior of the bedroom achieves unity, this achieves unity because all the colors tie with one another. The pillows are seen throughout the room. One is on the bed and the other on the chair. The color of the chair goes with the different designs on the pillows, and the art on the wall, next to the window. Other than the color orange, mostly everything in neutral. The different aspects of design in this interior do achieve unity.
The interior of this bathroom shows gradation. The tiles of the bathroom, in the shower shows an ombre from the top (darkest) to the bottom (lightest). Gradation in design shows a gradual increase or decrease of color, size, and pattern. In this specific design, it shows a decrease in the colors black and white.
The interior of this room shows transition. Transition in design is when there is a curved line leading one's eye from one place to the other in a room. The couch is curved and it takes your eyes from the front of the room to the back of the room and in doing so you can see all the details included.
This picture shows opposition, opposition in rhythm. Opposition is achieved when lines meet to form right angles. In this picture, the chair in the back forms right angles, the dining table shows a right angle, and the painting also forms right angle. The actual painting also forms right angles, coming out to be rectangular forms.
This picture shows a lot of repetition. When talking about repetition in design, repetition are the repeating of colors, shapes, forms, and/or texture. For starters, the white stools in front of the island are repeated three times. The lights on top of the island is also repeated three times. Behind on top of the bookshelf, towards the back of the picture, there are repeating statues of elephants.
The interior of this house is mostly neutral except for the painting in the background. The art towards the back adds color, therefore making it the attention seeker. The red art contrasts the white, making your eyes pay attention to the art. Having the effect of the art, towards the back creates emphasis.
This design of the interior shows balance. This design achieves something we called "Asymmetrical balance". Asymmetrical balance is when a room appears to be balanced but the 2 sides are not identical. For example, in this design the fake plant (on the left) balances with the 2 vases/sculptures (right side). The brown chair with the pillow balances with the white basket.
Variety in design means combining different styles and materials together. This achieves harmony because even though there is a variety of colors, the room is still appealing to the eye. It also includes a variety of lines but the interior of the house looks very well together. Everything goes together even though there is a lot of different things going on.
