Bathroom laundry ideas
Hidden broom cupboard. This pull-out keeps the cleaning essentials hidden away and beautifully organised – ready to clean up spills immediately. Amazingly, this broom cupboard will only steal 200 millimetres of floor space from your kitchen, but having the broom, dustpan and mop on hand right when you need them will prove to be one of life’s essential luxuries.

Store irons and ironing boards A clever idea is to stow an ironing board in a custom-built cupboard and flip it out when needed. Keep the iron on a shelf in the same place and make sure there is an electrical socket within the cavity to conveniently power the iron. Alternatively, mount the ironing board directly onto the wall or hang it on the back of the laundry door to keep it up and out of the way. If none of that is possible, a simple solution is to buy a small padded board designed to sit on the benchtop.

Functional storage: Irons, mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners… think about the equipment you keep in your laundry then design your storage needs around that. Ideally, you’ll have a combination of deep and shallow drawers, tall and short cupboards.
Wall mounted accordion style drying racks. Just be sure not to mount them much higher than 1500 millimetres or you’ll be straining to reach the back rungs. Tip: Wet washing weighs several kilos so use a stud-finder and heavy-duty anchor points to support the weight of your drying rack when it’s loaded up with

Consider asking stonemason to include a sink insert to increase bench top space over sink sometimes.

A deep wide sink is best like this stainless steel farmerhouse sink. Consider a laundry tap with a flexible hose and pull-out spray nozzle such as the one pictured here. If you only have room for a small sink, try mounting your tap at a far corner of the sink instead of in the centre at the back, and opt for swivel models that you can rotate out of the way.

Raise laundry bench height to 920 mm. People are taller on average than when 900-millimetre bench heights came into vogue, so if you’re designing or renovating your laundry, consider raising the bench to improve the ergonomics. A slightly taller 920-millimetre-high bench suits most people and does wonders for improving posture and back pain after all those hours spend folding clothes. The very long legged can even nudge bench heights up to 1000 millimetres.
Marble tiles. Sinks will be the most versatile bathroom element with respect to different sizes that can work. Showers are required to be a minimum of 900 x 900 millimetres. Toilets can fit into spaces as small as 760 millimetres wide and 1,400 millimetres long.
Small bathroom. Be certain to note the toilet dimensions in your project so you have adequate space. There are standard-size toilets and elongated configurations. The elongated type will extend into the room by another 50 to 80 millimetres.

Narrow wall with glass shelves as a screen. Consider that if you allow 900 millimetres for the sink and 900 millimetres for the shower, and if you have a minimum width of 700 millimetres for the toilet, you will have a room that is 2.5 metres long.
More common is to have a curb to define the shower’s parameters, as in the bathroom here. This curb is normally 80 to 100 millimetres high and 100 to 150 millimetres wide.
Streamlined toilet. MIRRORED CABINETS: The depth of vanities or medicine cabinets needs to be 100 to 130 millimetres overall and 90 to 110 millimetres on the interior shelves to suit most people. Widths and heights in bathrooms depend on the individual, but most pre-built medicine cabinets are about 560 millimetres wide and 750 millimetres tall.
Extend the vanity benchtop in a shallower depth over the toilet tank. Since vanity heights vary from 850 to 950 millimetres, carefully consider whether your fixtures will fit comfortably under an extended benchtop. Not only does the tank need to be low enough, but you must be able to remove the lid without obstruction.
