Esqueda - Exterior
What I like about this picture is the front porch -- the railings we currently have I don't think add much (I mentioned this in another photo as well) and now that I think of it, they are a ton of maintenance (we had to paint them a year ago and it was SUCH a pain). So something like this looks very nice but is also less maintenance. I like to have hanging plants - we can't have landscaping flowers/color because deer eat them -- so it's important to have the hanging flower part because that becomes our "pop of color" on the outside. We currently have only 2 very large shrubs (which I hate) on either side of our front porch -- however I like these very small simple shrubs (which I hope could be easy to maintain). Now that I look again, I like the look of the opening from the front, to the front door - it is like very welcoming. Currently ours is from the side.
I'm including this because if I think of the garage addition (on 2nd floor) and our desire to have that new space possibly have vaulted ceilings, this is what I could envision that might look like from the front (with the 3rd 'floor' elevation having additional windows or something from the front). It is a little bit hard to visualize what the roof lines would look like or if something like this would work, but I definitely like the left section of this house.
Really like this house - very cohesive. Like the vertical elements, dimensionality, windows facing lots of directions, like the front porch. What I don't like is totally all white (except roof I guess) -- like it needs some special element to make it less "current day cookie cutter". Like the garage doors/lights above and that separator above garage doors and the floor above it. Like the peaks of some sections of the house.
This probably looks extravagant but the reason I'm including it is because of the super cool section of the windows at the middle. It reminds me of the back corner of our house where the perpendicular sections meet. To be honest I'm not sure this fits anywhere in the design but I just thought it was too cool not to put here. Love that is breaks up the expanse of roof, adds more windows, adds height/dimension. Do not like other aspects of the photo fir our house (don't really like stone exterior of the curved elements of beams or roofing.)
This is a nice home, but what I don't like about it is that it isn't very cohesive (in my opinion). Example - main house has the window shutters, but garage windows don't and look more modern. It ends up looking more like the garage addition was an addition, instead of always part of the house or original part of the house.
What I like about this picture is the front porch beams. We really love our front porch, but the current rails/slats we have surrounding it don't really serve any function (I think). And they probably contribute a lot to the colonial look of the house overall. So I think if we may be trying to have the house take on a different exterior look besides patently colonial, maybe changing out front porch railings and such is something we could think about.
What I like about this picture is the roof separator thing between the garage door and the 2nd floor. I feel we would want something like that, but am not sure if it would mean we would lose a lot of interior space since it seems then the 2nd floor has to be set back quite a bit. So just an idea but not in lieu of lots of space i think.
What I really like about this photo is the left side -- I like the symmetry of the windows and I like that there are groups of 3 windows. More visually interesting (and more light) than our current single windows. The symmetry top and bottom gives look of more grandeur and taller. If I think of the vaulted ceilings too on the addition, I wonder if the roof lines might join and look something like this which is nice overall look/nicely done.Gosh could we have any chance to add that pop-out window to the main house area to bring light into the dark upstairs hallway?
What I like about this is the vertical slats (or whatever they are called) and also the variation in the roof line. Currently our roof is a massive monolith surface, and I think some variation such as this (for example) will make it more interesting both inside and out. Also allows for more windows or skylights or something. I am not a huge fan of the dark black here unless perhaps it is more of accent coloring and not throughout whole exterior.
