Pros also highly recommend adding custom drying drawers or cabinets. Designer Emily Pinney of Pinney Designs in Boston added custom drying drawers with mesh bottoms to this remodeled laundry room. “So many items need to be dried flat and not go in a dryer,” Pinney says. “These drawers allow space for that. And by stacking these shelves and building them into the design, they’re not taking up precious floor space with free-standing drying racks.”
The layout of the space allowed for ample storage and features, such as a deep sink and an extra refrigerator for the home. Light blue cabinets (Lullaby by Sherwin-Williams) with brass hardware. Brick flooring painted white (Alabaster by Benjamin Moore). Custom open shelving designed to hold a laundry basket.

Who says a laundry room can’t feel high-end? The lovely countertop material in this room from Everything Home in Carmel, Indiana, elevates the space. Decorative objects and art on the open shelving help the area feel styled and intentional, though the shelving could also be repurposed as practical storage when needed.
One standout feature of this space is the DryAway rack. It provides hanging space that conveniently tucks away to keep the laundry room functional and clutter-free. Other special features. Slate floor tile. Brushed nickel hardware. White quartz countertop.

We created a focal point with the window across the entrance and decided to place the sink and a hanging fixture above it to show the height of the space,” Calasich says. “We selected a fun floor tile with soothing colors and picked our cabinet color from one of the tile colors. We usually do a couple of shades lighter [for the cabinets], as the tones of the floor tile can be quite bright for cabinetry.”

There’s a sense of stylish modern utility in this laundry room by Swanson Homes in Medina, Minnesota. The colors, straight lines and sconce are subtly industrial, and the leather-handled baskets add a beautiful finishing touch. Takeaway: Baskets and hampers are an easy and inexpensive way to add style to a laundry room.
There’s similar contrast between the dark floors and white cabinets in this Boston laundry room by JMH Designs. The matte black faucet and hardware bring the contrast to the countertops and cabinets. But it was the eye-catching elegant backsplash that was the most buzzed-about topic in Houzz users’ ideabooks. Takeaway: A laundry room backsplash usually won’t require a lot of tile, so it’s a good opportunity to splurge on something special.
Sleek slate gray appliances work well with the charcoal floor in this Calgary, Alberta, laundry room. Designer Susan de Ridder of Live Well Interiors gave the room beautiful transitional style with finishes like the quartz countertop and large-format floor tiles. And the pros at Knight Custom Homes maximized functionality with smart cabinetry. Takeaway: Dark floors are a great way to anchor a mostly white space.
This expansive laundry room by Heiser Designs shares space with a walk-in pantry. Houzz users were drawn to the patterned floor tile, an element seen in several of the most popular laundry rooms. Smart functional features such as the hidden litter box, drying rack and apron-front utility sink also grabbed attention.
The tall cabinet to the left of the machines accommodates brooms and mops, one cabinet over the machines is for soaps and other laundry supplies, and the others have room for pool towels. The front-loading washer and dryer sit atop pedestals. The added height from the pedestals makes loading and unloading easier.

Elevated appliances for easier loading & unloading. Other special features. Alcove for hanging delicate and long clothing. Creative spaces for wicker basket storage. Beige quartz countertop and porcelain floor tiles. “Glass jugs highlight detergent and clothespins, which both align with the color palette of the room,” designer Jennifer Amrami says. “Silver cabinetry hardware matches the washer, dryer and lighting fixture.” Designer secret. The “wall-to-wall white cabinetry and white porcelain wall tiles reflect the ambient light and enhance the clean feeling of the entire space,” Amrami says.
Designer tip. “The best decision was to build the wood-planked top above the washer and dryer,” designer Sarah Martin says. “It cleaned up the space beautifully and lends much-needed additional real estate.” “Uh-oh” moment. “The original space was covered in wallpaper, and the ceilings had a popcorn texture,” Martin says. “At first, our team started the painstaking process of removing both of these materials. That’s when the idea came to skip the rest of that painful process and apply the beadboard wall treatment instead right over the top — both on walls and ceiling. Best
Main feature. White beadboard used for the walls and ceiling, supporting the modern farmhouse style. Other special features. Maple sink base and folding counter in a clear-coat finish. Carrara marble countertop surrounding a stone sink. Slate tile flooring.
“Wrapping the tile all the way around the window right up to the ceiling really helps to create height in a more intimate space and create drama” in a space with a high ceiling, designer Cynthia Soda says. “Use high-contrast materials, and if you have an interesting shape, like the diamond backsplash, don’t be afraid to use contrasting grout.
