House at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with two young boys
Location: Westwood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles
Size: About 3,000 square feet (279 square meters)
Designers: Paige Pierce Design (interior design) and Harrison Design (architecture)
Designer Paige Pierce has been friends with one of the owners of this 1930 Tudor-style house in the Westwood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles since they were in high school. So when the couple decided to renovate the house after living in it for five years, they brought in Pierce at the start to guide them through the extensive renovation process. “It was basically a total gut remodel on the inside,” the designer says. “The vaulted ceiling in the living room is the only original feature that remained.”
While most of the interior materials and furnishings are new, the goal was to create a house that still felt classic — with a modern twist. The new furniture pieces in the living room are custom and feature traditional lines with contemporary upholstery. “The side chairs are covered in a bright, bold green, and the sofa is this fantastic distressed blue,” Pierce says.
The abstract painting on the back wall is by San Diego artist Karina Bania. The hutch against the side wall is the only antique in the living room. Pierce found it at a local secondhand shop and had it refinished.

The dining room features new wainscoting and a new coffered ceiling. “Adding in that classic character was key to the design,” Pierce says. “It’s also practical because we knew we wanted to wallpaper the dining room, so the wainscoting protects the walls from the young boys bound to bump into them.”
Pierce selected a wallpaper with a blue-and-white palm frond pattern. The wainscoting and coffered ceiling are painted in Sporty Blue by Sherwin-Williams, a color the designer selected to complement the wallpaper. The round wooden dining table is surrounded by antique Chippendale chairs that Pierce had reupholstered. The contemporary brass chandelier adds a glamorous touch.

The homeowners love to cook and host dinner parties, so having a professional eight-burner gas range was a top priority for the kitchen. The space features white Shaker-style cabinets, handmade ceramic subway tiles and an island painted in Benjamin Moore’s Pale Smoke.
Pierce reupholstered the four counter stools in blue vinyl to add character and make them easy to clean for a family with two young boys. The floors throughout the house are gray-washed oak.

The kitchen opens up to the family room, where a large sectional provides a comfortable spot for the family to curl up and watch a movie on the large flat-screen television on the wall (not pictured).
A Dutch door that leads to the backyard allows the parents to watch and hear their kids when they’re outside playing. The architects at Harrison Design raised the ceiling in the kitchen and family room, but doing so required adding a structural steel beam. Pierce had another nonstructural beam added to the ceiling for symmetry and then had both beams wrapped in a gray-washed wood veneer to match the floors.

The homeowners wanted their master bedroom to feel like a calming retreat. The bed is upholstered in a sea glass-colored linen. A large cotton area rug feels great on bare feet. French doors lead to the backyard.
The large master bathroom includes a walk-in shower and a freestanding tub. The shower walls are covered in marble subway tiles, and the floors are covered in marble laid in a chevron pattern. The custom double vanity is painted in Hinting Blue from Sherwin-Williams. “Blue is the one color that both homeowners like, so we tried to weave it into every room of the house,” Pierce says.

Harrison Design reworked the backyard courtyard, which features new bluestone pavers. Pierce selected the outdoor furniture, including the teak dining table with a stone top and the white campaign-style dining chairs.
