Starting out with a project that has good bones is always a bonus as was the case with the project. This young family has a great house on a great street in a great location. The kitchen was a large space with ample room and great view to the backyard. The dated cabinets and large peninsula layout however were not working for them, so they came in looking for a fresh start.
Goals for the project included adding a large island with seating for four and a bright, open and cheerful space for daily meals and entertaining. Our clients also wanted to keep the existing breakfast table, but the original space did not allow for an island and breakfast table. Our solution was to create banquette seating which gave us the extra inches necessary to accomplish both.
The larger awning window over the kitchen sink allows for ample light in the new space. The wall between the kitchen and family room was partially removed to provide the more open feeling our clients desired.
The work triangle is centered on the island which serves as a big open prep space conveniently located across from the large pro style range. The island also houses the microwave and a 2nd oven for larger gatherings. A new counter depth fridge and beverage center provide options for refrigeration.
A simple pallet of white cabinetry, Carrera marble countertops and polished nickel fixtures will be a timeless look and provide a lovely backdrop for entertaining and spending time with family.

BrunarhansNarrow with a sloped roof presents a bit a challenge for this kitchen. The island seating moves people out of the way, giving the cook plenty of room. Clever storage space and tall pantry cabinets makes everything available in a small space.

Level One ConstructionCompatibility with existing structure
This project involved rethinking the space by discovering new solutions within the same sq-footage. Through a development city permit process we were able to legally remove the enclosed solarium sliding doors and pocket-door to integrate the kitchen with the rest of the space. The result, two dysfunctional spaces now transformed into one dramatic and free-flowing space which fueled our client’s passion for entertaining and cooking.
A unique challenge involved integrating the remaining wall “pillar” into the design. It was created to house the building plumbing stack and some electrical. By integrating the island’s main countertop around the pillar with 3”x6” ceramic tiles we are able to add visual flavour to the space without jeopardizing the end result.
Functionality and efficient use of space
Kitchen cabinetry with pull-out doors and drawers added much needed storage to a cramped kitchen. Further, adding 3 floor-to-ceiling pantries helped increase storage by more than 300%
Extended quartz counter features a casual eating bar, with plenty of workspace and an undermounted sink for easy maintenance when cleaning countertops.
A larger island with extra seating made the kitchen a hub for all things entertainment.
Creativity in design and details
Customizing out-of-the-box standard cabinetry gives full-height storage at a price significantly less than custom millwork.
Housing the old fridge into an extra deep upper cabinet and incasing it with side gables created an integrated look to a “like-new” appliance.
Pot lights, task lights, and under cabinet lighting was added using a 3-way remote controlled dimmer assuring great lighting on a dark day.
Environmental considerations/features
The kitchen features: low-flow motion sensor faucet. Low-voltage pot lights with dimmers. 3, 3-way dimmer switches with remote control technology to create amazing ambiance in an environmentally friendly way. This meant we didn’t need to run new 3-way wiring, open walls, thus, avoiding extra work and debris.
Re using the “like-new” Energy-efficient appliances saved the client money.
HDR Remodeling Inc.The kitchen includes cabinets by Columbia in two different colors. The cabinets are maple with a furniture finish. Some of the upper cabinets were finished out with clear glass. The custom granite countertops installed by Bay Works unify the space with an eat-in area and dramatic lighting completes this lovely remodel. The Zephyr Venezia exhaust fan adds a nice finishing touch.

Renovisions These homeowners were anxiously ready to remodel their dated 80’s kitchen and reached out to Renovisions to handle the transformation. In this new undertaking we met to discuss plans to brighten the dark room with custom painted white inset cabinets, adding more functional storage, better task lighting and GE Monogram appliances, new hardwood flooring throughout and creating a better flow into the adjacent family room. In order to open up the space, Renovisions suggested creating an angle at the peninsula. Continuing with this approach we replaced the rear door with a new one-light door that swings out instead of in to accommodate new bar stools and a better flow of traffic in and out to the deck outside. Silestone’s quartz countertops in ‘Merope’ were the perfect choice adding a nice contrast yet truly durable and low maintenance. Creating a beautifully unique subway tile niche in linen color at cooktop area and backsplash added an elegant touch to the overall look and homeowners were thrilled with this refreshing look after the Renovision.
Now their newly renovated kitchen is a showcase and nicely outfitted for family and friends.

LA Dwelling IncWalls were removed and a pass through created transforming a cramped kitchen/dining area into a bright open space. It now has ample storage, an island with seating, a desk area and is open to the newly repurposed dining/family room.
Neil Kelly CompanyModern materials were chosen to fit the existing style of the home. Mahogany cabinets topped with Caesarstone countertops in Nougat and Raven were accented by 24×24-inch recycled porcelain tile with 1-inch glass penny round decos. Elsewhere in the kitchen, quality appliances were re-used. The oven was located in its original brick wall location. The microwave convection oven was located neatly under the island countertop. A tall pull out pantry was included to the left of the refrigerator. The island became the focus of the design. It provided the main food prep and cooking area, and helped direct traffic through the space, keeping guests comfortable on one side and cooks on the other. Large porcelain tiles clad the back side of the island to protect the surface from feet on stools and accent the surrounding surfaces.
