Inspiring Landscape Solutions by Parveen DhaliwalMy garden was Sapna Bagh which translates to “garden of dreams”. It is an eclectic garden that attempts to represent the joy of coming home & immersing yourself in your carefully curated space.
Brimming in the moods, colours & textures created by your very own collection of plants, heavily influenced by your cultural origins, travels & interests.
It’s a garden style that’s bold, uniquely you, fun & exciting to experience every time you’re in the garden, every season!
The design uses plants in different ways to create a living artwork, i.e. akin to a painting or sculpture in a gallery. It evokes the senses & creates an emotional response to the curation.
There is a lot of detail & thought that goes into planning a garden and one which uses layers of hidden elements of symbolism which I’m finding underrepresented in design practice in residential spaces (given the heavy focus on practicality and aesthetics).
For example, this garden incorporates a “living” horse sculpture with several meanings. At one level, the horse represents the spirit of joy, adventure and wonderment, but it also links to a personal connection with this majestic creature as my spirit animal. It also aligns with my /(cultural) zodiac sign.
The horse, in many cultures, embodies a sense of independence &adventure, which extends to this garden via the plant selection representing the bountiful forms, textures and beauty existing in nature to explore and experience!
The colours red, yellow & blue nod to some of my cultural roots whilst adding to the cheer, elevating my thoughts and life outlook! I’m celebrating that I’m a plant collector for an excellent reason!

Northwest Native Landscapes LLCDramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

Inspiring Landscape Solutions by Parveen DhaliwalSignificant work was involved to upgrade and modernise the house but within a reasonable budget. The garden has a small footprint both in the front and rear, and there were many practical considerations to tackle like the use of space, navigation and privacy.
I especially love the new paving and stepwork for the front garden, as the stone used is one of my favourites in terms of material and colour, and the garden looks amazing at night.
There are little nuances like a boulder placed as a seating area with an existing garden ornament that is sentimental to the clients (mummy koala holding its baby) that add an emotional element to the space.
I love the tessellated tiles used for their front porch, replacing what was just a red painted concrete floor. It’s modern but adds that element of sophistication to the space and suits the house style and area.
The rear garden had to have storage, and we needed to ensure that the client’s car was able to be parked but should not detract from the newly landscaped space.
There is a granny flat in their rear garden that gets rented out, so I had to think about how to create privacy for both parties (the tenant and my clients)!
The choice of plants was a little different as I’d mixed in succulents with exotics that give some seasonality impacts over the year. I really love the new fascia of the conservatory and the new built-in external cupboards and workbench!

This space has been transformed into a lush garden perfect for indoor-outdoor living. This garden has been designed so that it is divided into 3 distinct areas, each surrounded by lush. abundant planting. closest to the house a dining patio with a large built in parasol for sunny and slightly rainy days, a second patio area with sofa and chairs offers a great space for coffee, working and drinks near the outdoor kitchen and BBQ area. The substantial built in benches at the rear of the garden offers a wonderful space for relaxing and entertaining with dappled shade from the overhead pergola and plants in summer and warmth of the fire pit on colder nights.
