The best measure of the quality of a business is how they respond when the going is tough. Cal Preserving comes through with shining colors. They stand behind their work and are pleasant about it. I originally had Cal Preserving finish my deck in 2014 when it was brand new. Then last year (in the midst of the pandemic), I had it refinished. Unfortunately there was miscommunication about whether sanding would be needed or not. We didn't sand and I wasn't happy with the result. But here's the good part: Cal preserving owned the communication confusion and redid the deck for me. This time they sanded, and my deck looks brand new. The team was fantastic (Jose, Oswaldo, Leo) and even remembered doing the original work in 2014. They really approach their work as true craftsmen. They are helpful, communicative, pleasant, respectful of property, neat, efficient and do fabulous work. I am very pleased with the result. It's easy to find someone who will refinish a deck....but there is a HUGE range of quality out there. Some are cheaper than Cal Preserving, but you will not get the value and the beautiful outcome from most others. They are top notch and will be the only team refinishing my deck going forward. Bruce and his crew have been taking care of our ipe deck (which had been poorly stained by someone without much experience with ipe) for over 5 years, and they recently refurbished a neglected 30 year old redwood deck (including removing some rotted piers and replacing boards, rebuilding a bench, and of course, cleaning, fixing loose nails/ boards and treating the redwood) at my parents' home. Bruce is honest, responsible, a great communicator and takes pride in his work and customer relationships. His crews are unfailingly on time, respectful, and professional. They always leave my deck and yard in great shape and tolerate my crazy dog with good humor. Even my elderly parents were delighted with the work and the crew. I plan to have Cal Preserving come annually to keep things in great shape and recommend them without reservation!

As a first time homeowner with a shortage of time and a deck in need of some tlc I needed not only a professional service but some solid advice on the care and treatment of my deck. Bruce was extremely friendly, and easy to work with. As others have mentioned, he responds to email very quickly and stays involved through the whole process. Not only was their work top notch, but Bruce was also very forthcoming and honest about what really needed to be done to care for the deck which was extremely helpful in getting the right work done within my tight budget.
