Mark Lawton is a licensed architect with over 20 years of experience in residential architecture. In addition to custom residential projects, he is a co-founder of Ikaria Living, a development company focused on creating wellness through design. He draws upon his past experiences living in California, the Southwest, and Europe to create modern innovative designs ranging from sustainable desert dwellings to waterfront vacation homes. He is well versed in all areas of architectural and interior design, with an ongoing passion for combining leading edge technologies with timeless qualities learned from ancient cultures. Previous work experiences include Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Antoine Predock Architect, and Construct Internet Design as creative director. Mark has received widespread recognition for his work including features in several national and international publications. He graduated with distinction from the architecture program at Cornell University and was awarded the prestigious Eidlitz Traveling Fellowship to study the culture of Greece. Mark Lawton has been featured in HGTV Garden, the DIY Network, the Boston Globe, New England Home Magazine, Design Rhode Island, SOCO magazine, and Best of Houzz 2015, 2016, 2017.

We hired Mark on three home renovation/redesign projects and have been pleased on every occasion. We selected Mark because we liked his design aesthetic, responsiveness, and flexibility. He patiently worked with us at our pace--over months and months--to iterate on large and small design elements. He designed solutions to our entryway that opened up the house while maintaining intimacy in the living room, created subtle features to divide up a large room, and developed an amazing outdoor room and patio that continues to be our favorite feature. We later brought Mark back for improvements to our master suite and all our bathrooms. He remains our first call for any future projects.

Project scope - interior renovation of 3000+ sqft condo including extensive Kitchen, master bath and stairway redesign. Mark brought extensive architectural and interior design expertise to our "last house", and it was a pleasure to work with him. He was able to listen for our ideas and vision, and coach us in the decision making process to achieve our dream. The kitchen was small and cramped, Mark re-imagined the space to capture natural light through a unique ceiling light well. The cabinetry layout reinforces the architecture and creates a cohesive plan, it is my favorite room in the house. Mark provided recommendations for the interior palette that highlights the stairwell. The stairs and railing are expertly detailed with clean, simple lines with beautiful finishes. Of course the bathroom is wonderful, it make sharing so much easier! Mark worked with our contractor to create a great project team.

I was introduced to Mark on a home renovation project and then also got to see his work on a large office project. In the smaller home re-design, he helped my wife and I create a strikingly beautiful kitchen, with a custom banquet, glass-doored pantry, stylized entryway, and half bath. Everything fit perfectly for the space and style of the home. I later needed his help on on a $million+ office renovation that needed a special, custom touch. He brought flair and style to that project that was completely different than the work he had done on my home -- but equally perfect for the space. It is no wonder that he works in so many places and on so many different projects. He is an architect's architect, one who can take any idea and make it stunning.

Mark Lawton is highly competent, professional, and creative. Mark traveled to Costa Rica to evaluate the building site in January 2013. We spent several days considering options, as the site is remote, high on a bluff, and it presented some challenges. Mark's final design incorporated many local materials and maximized the views. Excellent service, great experience, definitely a good value.

Mark & I worked together in 2005 to create the 'Lighthouse 01'. My first meeting with Mark & Kyra lasted two hours & and within two weeks, they had designed the house of my dreams. Now eight years later, while living, hosting many family events and holidays - my home has suited my every need flawlessly. I attribute that to the talent of Lawton Design Studio. I truly enjoyed my time working with them and seeing their work around New England.

As a retired couple, we were looking for a “not so big house” that lives large and spacious. Lawton Design Studio transformed our small, old (early 1800s), dark and inefficient cottage into a light, open and beautifully functional space. And they did it while adding only 180 square feet to the existing 1,300! By completely reimaging and redesigning the first floor interior space, Mark replaced the chopped-up floor plan with an open living/dining space that reveals a light-filled kitchen beyond. The design takes full advantage of the southern light at the back of the house and provides an “expandable” space that feels gracious and welcoming for large gatherings as well as for just the two of us. Mark has a wonderful way of working with you -- questioning and listening, offering design options and ideas, and encouraging an open discussion. He also understands budget and time constraints, creating a design that is not only beautiful and functional, but also realistic. The result for us is the home we dreamed of…only so much better!

We hired Lawton Design Studio to renovate a house we had just bought. Mark designed my dream kitchen and turned a crummy in-law apartment into an upscale master suite - walk in closet and fabulous bathroom included. It's now almost two years later and we're still thrilled with the work. The kitchen is perfect for both intimate family dinners and large scale entertaining. And our master suite is a blessed oasis to which we happily retire every night. In fact, I don't like to travel as often as I used to because the accommodations rarely compare with what we have at home! Perhaps most importantly, however, is that we stayed on budget and fantastically on schedule - I gave no wiggle room on the end date and, impressively, everything was finished the day before. Moving and renovating a house is typically not fun or easy, but working with LDS was great. I completely trusted LDS to do the work well and give us a great finished product and we were not disappointed.
