We commissioned Matt & Sarah to design our garden having researched a number of other local designers and landscape firms. Matt demonstrated a real understanding of our requirements and what we were trying to achieve with our garden and the amalgamation with our outside home design (clean lines). The garden itself was overgrown which gave Matt and his team a blank canvass. We worked together with them on a clear and defined process, keeping it mind the projected finish and it's dovetailing with our new conservatory. At each critical point in the process, Matt and his team would review the work carried out to ensure our satisfaction before moving to the next phase. We genuinely felt that Matt had our best interests at heart and the finished design is testament to that belief. We really enjoy sitting out with friends and family, enjoying the Rivelin fire table, the “togetherness” sculpture by Paul Margetts and the odd glass of vino.

We asked Matt and Sarah to create a design for our south facing garden which is 25m long x 10m wide. We required a lot from the space which had an existing garage and patio. The design brief included a wildlife pond, deep planting borders, screening from surrounding properties, a growing area with space for large raised beds and greenhouse, patio and the largest space possible for a lawn. The pergola was a genius idea - not only does it provide privacy, but there's even more space for climbers! The design also allowed for us to easily add a lighting scheme which transforms the garden at night. The garden designer, Matt Nichol is extremely knowledgeable and helps you to find your inner horticulturalist! He listens to your ideas then transforms it into something special.

To put it simply, I moved into a modern and rather minimalist property and all it had at the rear of the house was a very large, flat lawn . To make matters worse, the lawn flooded rather badly in the winters and was rather unattractive. I commissioned Matt to solve a number of practical issues for us (including the flooding) and in the process he also injected the creativity I needed to create an interesting garden with the modern twist our minimalist home needed. I enjoyed working with Matt as he had a logical and creative approach to designing a practical and attractive garden. He was easy to work with and I felt comfortable expressing my ideas about the garden without feeling awkward. Matt responded to my comments and walked me through the 'pros and cons' of different options. It was difficult for Matt to establish a budget for the garden due to the size and complexity of the space. I did find that the overall spend was greater than I had anticipated, but what I have found is that it was money well spent. The garden no longer floods which means my grandchildren can play nicely and the planting and new layout give me a great deal of joy. There is so much seasonal interest and the planting is really maturing well now that it has been in for a couple of seasons. I have been really pleased with the service that Matt offered me, so much so that I have used his services to help my children get the most out of their own gardens!

Matt has designed and constructed my own garden and a few of my clients, I'm a specialised house builder. He listens to his clients ideas and comes up with additional suggestions helping harmonise the gardens into exactly what the client wants. His knowledge and understanding of the plants he uses is excellent and fits into what ever style of garden is required. He uses hard and soft landscaping to give super effects. Not the cheapest solution but for his sort of quality he is excellent value for money.

At my request Mr Nichol provided Concept Plans to re-design my modest back garden 100’ long x 25’ wide. The job involved re-using a quantity of natural stone already existing in the garden from a time when the plot was part of a farm. The remit also required a fresh look at the traditional design with a view to making it easier to manage whilst facilitating opportunities for wildlife, flora & fauna to thrive. A contractor carried out the hard landscaping, and the planting, which I am doing myself, is ongoing. However modest your means, a garden designer has the skills to unlock your garden’s potential in ways you never dreamed possible. Employing him will be a catalyst to creativity, the results of which, will unfold with the seasons. Aside from the design skills set, from my own experience, Matt Nicol has the requisite people skills to guide and support the customer throughout the process.

I had previously employed Matt Nichol Garden Design Ltd. for my prior house. They had done such a good job that when I moved I knew they were the ones to call. They have excellent service, communcation and are very accommodating to any changes that you want to be made. I would thoroughly recommend them to all.
