What has so impressed me is that when their Seattle area clients moved to the San Francisco Bay Area (where there are many talented designers), they imported his team to design their new home. Stephen contacted my general contractor husband to work on the project and now I understand what makes him special. Stephen has the unique ability to take a nebulous project concept and orchestrate a spectacular result. Perhaps this talent comes from his training in music, which also informs his expressive style. I worked with Stephen in 2002 on a full remodel of my kitchen and I am absolutely thrilled with the result! Stephen listened carefully to what I wanted and designed a kitchen that is far more beautiful than I could ever have imagined on my own. He provided wonderful options for every aspect of the project and provided wise advice, guiding me through the myriad of decisions that such a project involves. The project included cutting a large pass-through to the dining room in one wall, adding new cabinets to two of the four walls, refacing the remaining cabinets to match the new, installing a tile floor in a beautiful and unique design created just for me, along with a matching tile backsplash, new countertops and new appliances. When Stephen described the lighting he had in mind for the new space, I thought he was really over doing it -- I couldn't possibly need that much light! But I took his advice and as soon as the lighting was in place, I realized he had been absolutely correct! I LOVE the lighting! First-time guests to my home always comment on how beautiful the kitchen is, and when I show them the "before" pictures, they can hardly believe it is the same space. We also chose paint colors and accent walls for most of the main level of my home, so the entire living space flows together beautifully. Stephen recommended excellent contractors who showed up when they said they would, did excellent work, and completed the job in the expected amount of time. The full project costs came in as budgeted. In 2012 I hired Stephen as the designer for a remodel of the master bedroom. Once again, I am thrilled with the result -- he was able to take my rather vague description of wanting a 'space that is my sanctuary' and, through the careful choice of bedding, wall colors, window treatments, furnishings, and lighting, transformed the room into the peaceful haven I wanted but did not know how to achieve on my own. Redoing the master bath is next, and I absolutely plan to hire this same company again.

I recommended that Stephen Marshall Design be hired to help us renovate our retirement community's chapel-multi-use space because I had been impressed with other buildings and spaces he had worked on; I knew he could work with a "church-type" committee of professionals and residents with diverse opinions and help us capture what we were looking for in our space. His knowledge of theology was helpful in our deciding on a theme; he was helpful in finding the right people and companies to execute the design; we liked his design ideas and cooperative attitude as well as the ability to listen to the needs and wants we were trying to fulfill. The resultant space is beautiful, used much more than before the renovation, and is much more functional as well. His ability to link us to the Japanese glass artist, Keiko Miura, resulted in a beautiful and one-of-a-kind glass window-wall that will last over time. He respected our time-lines and budget constraints as well. I am pleased to recommend him to anyone.

Stephen has an incredible eye. He took two awkwardly shaped spaces(living room, basement rec area) in our house and created all the pieces (drapes, pillows, layout of existing furniture, design front hallway built in cabinet, etc) needed to come up with a comfortable area in our house that was originally unused and now is a cherished place for us to rest and read. Everything he offered was in the interest of beauty, practicality, and doing all within a reasonable budget. What I like about Stephen is that at no time did he force his design aesthetic on us, but really could take what we were trying to do with our home (feeling of warmth, comfort) and merge it with his design skills and gifts. Each step of the way, he would explain why something worked and educated and empowered us , which enabled us to make any changes later. I'd highly recommend Stephen for any interior design or design work generally. Plus, Stephen is really fun to work with. Laughter and love was part of each of our exchanges :)
