Architect John Altobello has many years experience guiding homeowners through successful home renovation projects. With a Ph.D. in literature from Harvard University and a B.A in architecture from Boston Architectural College, he has the necessary communication and design skills to grasp clients’ wishes for their home. He translates their desires into concrete design solutions. A cornerstone of his practice is the ability to build a dynamic and effective team among homeowner, architect and contractor and others. Under John’s leadership the team maintains open channels of communication about project expectations, goals, progress and outcomes. A foundation of John’s practice is the belief that careful listening to a client’s needs and aspirations is key to any successful project. In addition, John believes in building a dynamic and effective team among homeowner, architect, contractor, and other trade professionals. An active member of the Boston Society of Architects committees, John is currently involved in “Renovate for Recovery.” This volunteer effort benefits victims of the Boston Marathon bombing with home design solutions and materials which help them better cope with their physical needs and limitations.

We are known for working collaboratively with our clients, consultants and builders to produce inventive, efficient and beautiful homes. As a small firm we are able to provide our full attention, experience and creative skills to each project. We begin every project with meetings with our clients to understand their needs and goals. We then proceed through series of design phases, gradually adding more detail while attending to cost, permitting and scheduling issues. Environmental sustainability – green design and building – has always been a primary consideration in our practice. We have long-standing relationships with excellent builders that we can recommend to our clients. We stay very involved with the project during construction to ensure that the quality of construction matches our design and our clients goals. We have diverse backgrounds – in construction, the arts, and fabrication, which allow us to create unique and creative solutions for each project. Bill Boehm has vast experience in residential architecture, ranging from his work in New Mexico and California, as a Peace Corps architect in Africa, to affordable housing in the Boston metro area.

We create a custom design for each of our projects by listening to our clients to understand their goals and dreams and then present concepts and designs that garner our clients’ confidence. Our designs begin with hand sketches, develop into virtual 3D models, and seamlessly translate to construction drawings and specifications. While no two projects are the same, our process for each project is very similar and allows our team to start with the big picture, not focus on the minutiae yet, collaborate with our design partners and builders, develop a dialogue with our clients and deliver a coordinated and detailed set of construction documents. Keeping to the team approach we appreciate our builders being on board early in the design process and we continue our involvement during construction. We’re problem solvers/ puzzle enthusiasts at heart, we care about the durability and sustainability for each project, and we enjoy the process with our clients along the way. Inherent in our work is an understanding of the client’s needs and the project’s setting and vernacular that creates a home of great durability, sustainability, and beauty. Steven Baczek Architect is a nationally recognized architecture firm that specializes in the design of custom, durable, energy efficient, residential structures. I designed numerous projects across the spectrum of energy performance, comfort, and durability, to include many of the nation's top energy conscious homes. While many state labels of "green" or "sustainability" to their work, I provide good, sound design, of enduring value to mine. My commitment simply equates aesthetics and durability with performance.
There is a growing interest in sustainable, energy efficient design as the public becomes better educated about the potential to create better buildings. The U.S. Green Building Council has done a great deal to raise the visibility of this movement and induce clients to embrace its goals by using its LEED rating system. However, there is also the misconception of a dividing line between green or sustainable buildings and more conventional buildings. All new buildings could (and should) meet a fairly high standard of energy performance and sustainability by taking advantage of the myriad cost-neutral methods and materials that are now available. These include; optimizing solar orientation and daylighting, sizing systems properly, using high efficiency equipment, using efficient framing techniques, using efficient appliances and lighting, and installing insulation systems properly. For those interested in our practice, the decision to build ‘sustainably’ is not subjective. It is based on a comparative analysis of energy and water usage, the environmental footprint and occupant health and comfort. These lifecycle costs can be quantified in pro forma that articulate the costs and benefits.
