We first contacted Un Archi Dans Ma Cuisine back in August 2020 after a year of unsuccessful matches with a handful of other architecture firms. As this was our first time undertaking major renovations, we appreciated how their website clearly explained the different stages of the process, what services the architect could provide and what costs to expect (I am surprised this transparency is not more common). We wanted to renovate our entire ground floor (entry, living room, dining room, and kitchen) with a budget of 75,000 euros. I had a clear vision of what I wanted for this space so it was important that there be good communication (especially as French is my second language) and that it be a collaborative effort. I found in Mr Parrain someone who listened carefully, demonstrated a high level of professionalism and most importantly was able to capture beautifully the aesthetic I was going for.
A second source of apprehension when renovating for the first time is dealing with artisans, I had heard nothing but horror stories from friends about their disastrous renovations and I wanted to avoid this at all costs. Therefore, we put our confidence in Mr Parrain to act as both the architect in the planning phase and the maître d’oeuvre during the building phase. This is where Mr Parrain truly excelled. He came on site on a regular basis, helped quickly solve any sticky issues that came up, and ensured that our satisfaction with the work always came first. The artisans, who have worked with Mr Parrain for a number of years, were excellent in their own right. On time, efficient, amiable, responsive and most importantly, top notch craftsmen.
Granted, no project is without setbacks and mistakes: In the planning phase there would be months without news from Mr Parrain, we would have to follow-up with his team, and I found myself having to repeat things. The start date to begin work kept being pushed back. At one point I was very close to ending our working relationship and going with a different firm to perform the actual work. I am glad my husband convinced me otherwise as once the renovations got underway it was a very positive experience. I should also mention that Mr Parrain apologized for the earlier setbacks and took accountability. I also recognize that many things were outside his control due to the COVID pandemic (reduced workforce due to illness, a high demand for his services, difficulties sourcing building materials) and should no longer pose a problem.
Lastly, while the final project cost a total of 120000 EUR, it was entirely my doing (choice of materials and appliances). Mr Parrain respected the original budget and there were no surprise costs. His fees were very reasonable considering what we got in retur
