With all the self-driving vehicles, it's only a matter of time before we get a country song where the guy's truck leaves him too.

I got a really nice harvest this year. Lots of 2.5-3" bulbs. I planted 36 cloves of an unkown hardneck that I bought at a Wisconsin grocery store last summer when visiting my brother. I believe it's some type of Racombole...maybe Spanish Roja. I think it may have been Amish grown as the mom and pop grocer sources a lot of their produce from the local Amish community.
I dug some chicken manure into the 4'x4' bed in September and planted the cloves around November 1. No top growth last fall. The manure seems to have made a big difference in size.
I plan to plant 72 this fall so need to remember to hold back enough for planting. Maybe a dozen or so bulbs. I'll crack open a bulb after they cure and see how many suitable seed cloves I can expect per bulb.

Two more weeks until I'll be planting my garlic. I've got two 4x4' beds prepped with composted chicken manure and ready to go. Seed garlic still looks good.

You are strange!

They're double that price here.
I'll have to look up how much you'd get in a bushel.

It's oyster country here, too, and my friend with the mussel farm also has oysters. My friends (different ones) have a cabin on Hood Canal where we harvest wild oysters and dig clams. I'm don't really eat the oysters unless they are fried - never raw. Olympia oysters are considered a rare delicacy; they almost went extinct but are now being cultivated. They are teeny-tiny and eaten raw. We also have geoduck, one of my favorite things but hard to find because the Japanese will pay so much for them, they almost all go overseas..

Timing is everything!

Have you ever tried to put a PFD (personal floatation device) on a teen chicken?
Where the heck did that question come from? Chickens never make it to their teens.

Not so bad here 100+ miles north of you, LoneJack. 82° now at midday.
I had my gas fireplace checked over and pilot light lit earlier this week, but my a/c has been running every day since. 🙄

LoneJack, my husband has never had a cup of coffee in his life. (That I know of)
You’re in good company.

Amazingly I'm still picking Cocozelle zucchini from a plant sown in early May. No squash bugs ever found it and the upper 90s heat spell from mid August to mid September didn't kill it like it did the yellow squash next to it although it did pretty much stop flowering during the heat wave. I picked 2 today and hand pollinated 2 more. There are a couple more that should be ready in a day or 2.
I'm also harvesting yellow filet beans (Goldilocks from Johnny's) that I sowed July 23rd. I picked 3 lbs today from half of the patch and I'm letting the other half fill out their pods for seed saving.
I have Oct. 27th circled on my calendar to plant my garlic weather permitting. I've already prepped the beds with composted chicken manure courtesy of my flock.

Collards and Beets.....

Some Peppers hanging on....

Persimmons ripening up....

...as the Pears say Good-Bye....

We hit a record high temp today, 91F which broke the old record of 87F. Hope that was the last 90 of the season. Cooler temps coming up by the weekend, these fall crops will breath easier. Upper 30's at night next week.

vgkg, those turnips are perfect and beautiful, I'm envious. I have a problem with root maggots which I haven't managed to overcome and they love the turnips, rutabaga, parsnips and radishes. They won't touch beets or carrots.
I'll be planting garlic next week, Friday it is projected to be 28F overnight so that'll finish everything off.
Annie

well Sherry " trying to buy votes" just send your back!LOL

Yes, happens to me too. I love doing basic IT troubleshooting (I am a freak 😄), and I can't find any pattern to it, as yet anyway. It is intermittently a problem here, first saw it many years ago. It is flaring up for me again now.
I am also getting forced logged out as I move around the site lately. That is annoying as heck.
Lonejack, I laughed out loud. Your sense of humor is fabulous. 😄

Thank you all. I'll try reading through before I go back to the 'See more comments' link.
LoneJack and Ally De, I wish I could like your replies more than once!

I bet the price the OP paid for that tenderloin in 2012 would look like quite the bargain today 14 years later.
I remember buying BT on sale for $8/lb. around that time and Rib roasts would be on sale for $5-6/lb. around Christmas.

So why did it get deleted already? Someone's a little flag happy I'm thinking.

LoneJack, the bot that posted it has a proven reputation, so I am not surprised it was deleted.

LoneJack - Yeah it’s Kansas, right by Overland Park.
Fun2 - Yes I actually agree in that aspect. Since posting I received another email about a Halloween costume event and a chili competition. I anticipate 90% of the costumes will be Chiefs related, which would only be a few percent up from everyday wear!

don't be so hard on yourself feathers. I'm sure you can figure it out eventually.

Rox - we need Canada's Crown Royal too but the bottling is done in the US so the import ban doesn't apply.

" Is this legal? "
The better question is do they care? Several legal analysts I've read say it isn't legal, but I'm not a lawyer and don't play one on TV. But I do know that even if it is illegal, they won't care.

Not me either.

I'd just do as you suggested above and experiment in a bed or two and judge for yourself.
A few years ago my brother brought in a truckload of pine mulch in the fall and tilled it into his huge sandy loam garden and he had a horrible yield the next summer. He didn't tell me about it until after the fact or I would have warned against it. He is in Wisconsin so the ground was frozen for much of the time so not apples to apples with your scenario in the south.
Good luck and I hope you find a solution to your problem.

That's sensible. Pine mulch will decay in a single year, and suck all the nitrogen out in that year. Cedar can last four years underground, so it will pull nitrogen only a quarter as fast. No question that uncomposted material pulls nitrogen out of the soil, but what's important here is how fast that happens. Yes, I have 2 cubic feet dug into a 5x5 bed that I use for collards. As a green, they need nitrogen! But I think I dug in a pile of uncomposted leaves in that bed last year, and had no problems this summer.

hungryfarmer, you need to talk to daninthedirt, he had the same problem and similar question. Also ask klem1 and Kevin (outpatientzero spelled wrong), they are also soil experts just like daninthedirt. All seem like your brothers from different mothers!
Good thing garden"gal" is here to help you, she is such an expert, her spidey sense must have been tingling.
Good luck.

thank you captain obvious

There has been a lot of talk of sump pumps around here lately; with the N'oreaster we had and huge swells here along the coast. No issues for us, but a neighbor lost power, and they had a luncheon planned that day. At the time, it wasn't even raining and the air was mild. Of course no power also means no water so we told them to move the lunch next door to us. And they moved in too, for 2 nights. We have a generator so no issues, and we never seem to get water in the basement as we are high up.

I have an 1860 house and a dirt-floor dungeon with a trench and a sump pump. I sometimes notice the sound when it turns on, and a few times I've noticed it when the float got stuck and the pump didn't turn off. But all in all it's not an annoying noise. If anything, it's reassurig.

There's no point in arguing over common names. There is no right and wrong since usage varies. It isn't true that 'when used everyone understands'. Only scientific names are universally understood.

I’ll see if along with the jalapeño, they can add my Tilupa to my chalupa.

Both of my grammars died before I was born so I have no grammar rules to obey.

This statement resonated with me:
“Language evolves because people use it,” says Lisa McLendon, PhD, a professor of journalism and mass communications at the University of Kansas. “The only languages that don’t change are dead languages. Latin no longer changes because no one speaks Latin anymore.”
