Houzz Tour: Work-From-Home Flat Hits All the Right Notes
The owners wanted to be inspired by their home, which is also their workspace – and this renovation delivered
The young couple are in the creative field: he’s a musician and she’s a graphic artist. Working from home, they wanted a space that would inspire them and reflect their personalities. It was up to designers Vandra Png and Wilson Teng of Studio FortyFour to flesh out this idea.

The entryway leads directly to the kitchen, which the designers have made accessible to the living and dining area via a windowed bar.
“Our carpenter found the mechanism of the hinged kitchen/bar window which can be opened, and will stay open, at varying angles,” says Png. The window allows daylight and cross-ventilation to flow between rooms.

The dining and bar chairs were carefully selected to match the kitchen laminate. Png says: “Instead of a simple countertop, we decide to explore a countertop with an engraved pattern, which was specially designed by the wife. It’s a collaboration between us, the owners and KompacPlus.”
On the backsplash, pink grout lines stand out from the grey tiles, complementing the forest green cabinetry.
Brass tap: Delta Faucet; flooring: Lian Seng Hin; wall finish: An Huat; White Wash Oak laminate for window: EDL; Espalier laminate for cabinet: Lamitak; Fiera Oak Elm with engraved pattern countertop: KompacPlus.

An arched window in a curved wall peeks into the living and dining area. Behind this curved wall is the husband’s music studio.

“The curved wall was not part of the flat’s original layout,” says Png. The designers added that and carved out the curved window niche “to connect the living and music studio yet minimise any disruptions while he is engaged in his music recording”.
The master bedroom features a custom-made hanging leather headboard, which was designed to reduce bulkiness in the tight space.
The standing dresser was ‘cut-out’ from the wardrobe to save space and reduce visual clutter.

Taking their cue from the owners’ creative backgrounds, designers Png and Teng proposed exploring unconventional materials and quirky design elements to breathe life into the five-room flat.
It starts at the entrance where a double-pivot door separates the entryway from the living and dining area. It creates a breathing and decompression space for the owners and their visitors, before stepping into the light-filled social space.
“A mix of complementary furnishings and the slanted colour-block painted wall characterise the living/dining space,” Png explains.
What looks like a circular piece of art is actually a speaker.
