Room Tour: A Cosy Living Room With Secret Storage
Versatility was the key word for the renovation of this couple's condo – especially for the living room, as they like to entertain often
When designer Biyi Oh of Proj. B Studio was commissioned to renovate this home, her clients pointed out the 844-square-foot-apartment’s bay windows as a challenge for accommodating the number of friends and family they wanted to entertain. “The homeowners approached us to design a workaround for the bay windows, in order to introduce more space and storage,” Oh says. Together with her team, Oh designed a neatly zoned space with a timeless appeal.
The bay window seat was visually extended by a bespoke TV console built in the same height. The L-shape it forms with the first step on the platform is echoed by the L-shaped false ceiling panel above, showcasing a carefully considered balance in the design.
Oh says: “The elevated living room is framed by ‘black lines’ that provide a continuity between functions, i.e from TV console, to bay window seats, before ending at the platform steps”.

The cosiness of the living room is enhanced by a built-in bookshelf that allows tomes to be at arm’s reach from the sofa.
From the sofa, you can view the rest of the apartment. The dining area is also designed around the bay window, and the kitchen is encased in a black box that leads the eye deeper into the home.

The design brief for the entire home was “a modern abode which is spacious and bright, coupled with a clean industrial feel that still retains a sense of cosiness”, Oh says. Her team’s nifty solution to crafting extra space into the apartment was to incorporate storage into the built-ins. The TV console obviously contains the set-top boxes and other audio-visual accessories.

Who lives here: A couple in their late twenties
Location: Novena
Designer: Biyi Oh, Vanessa Yong and Chong Wan Teng of Proj. B Studio
Oh and her team elevated the living room by two steps, placing it on a platform. This ‘lift’ brought the bay window seat to a more comfortable height, providing extra seating adjacent to the sofa. The steps also double as additional seating space as “the lady of the house has a larger family who visit for gatherings pretty often”, says Oh.
