This is my favorite shot incorporating all of the design elements in the room. The simple blue grey tile and wall colors complement the amazing quartzite countertops. The dark wood cabinets and wall paneling provide just the right amount of warmth to the room.

The exterior façade of the home is reminiscent of the 50’s with its mixed material aesthetic. The stacked stone veneer is complimented with the Shou Sugi Ban siding. The burned wood finish is an ancient Japanese technique that chars the wood, essentially wrapping it in carbon, adding protection and durability against mold, insects, and moisture related decay. This impressive burned wood finish is not only an indelible product but eye-catching as well. The horizontal and vertical orientation of the wood planks further emphasize the width and height of the structure. The subtle play of each material is simplistic and functional.
The three-story residence is tucked into the side of the slope, creating an unimposing and welcoming entry. The large expanses of glass on the front façade draw the eye into the home allowing for natural daylighting and sun soaked rooms throughout the day. The strategically placed horizontal windows add architectural interest, natural lighting, and privacy. Two separate third level balconies are situated toward the rugged skyline, creating a 360-degree vantage point of the surrounding terrain.

Frankfranco Architect’s was commissioned to design a cabana as part of a landscape master plan. The clients, who play host to many summer gatherings, wanted a sophisticated space that complimented their newly renovated home, yet suited their casual lifestyle. Key features of the Cabana include a 11’ long fireplace with a floating chimney, natural cedar soffits, folding glass walls, and Shou Sugi Ban siding. The Shou Sugi Ban siding, a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation, was hand torched by experienced tradesmen on site. The interior of the Cabana features playful tile work to appeal to the families four youngest members. The strong horizontal lines and non-traditional building materials, reminiscent of 1950’s architecture, alongside the piano-key inspired tile in the bathroom, led to the project title; [Frank] Sinatra Cabana.

House 19 is a two storey dwelling and by Using Shou Sugi Ban in multiple widths they have created a building which stands out for aesthetic detail rather than size. Incorporating corten steel around the windows and doors adds a contemporary vibe alongside detailed the flint work adding a traditionally local material to the exterior.
Taking careful consideration with the impact of the building they reduced the height on the southern elevation to a single storey; this forms a very eccentric pitched roof. This has also been done to take full advantage of the photovoltaic cells; the integration of these is both subtle and elegant.
This is a modest house that reflects the style and quality of the design. We worked with the Architect closely to achieve the finish they wanted with our bespoke Shou Sugi Ban. Enhanced Grain – Kyoka sa reta Kokumotsu was the chosen product allowing the effect of burnt timber aesthetics in terms of visual and textured appeal. When in reality this finish hasn’t yet seen a flame.
