Weird spots on wooden floor

These spots have started showing up on our floor. There has been nothing on top of them so it's not transference. Any ideas what they could be?

    Has any water come into contact with this floor? If so it looks like the floor protection is wearing low and will need varnishing to seal it

    I have seen this before on one of my projects. On that occasion it was caused by a metal insert in the legs of a table. The ferrous metal was reacting with the tanin in the oak floorTthe cure was to scrape back the Finnish and treat the stain with an oxalic acid solution, then re Finnish the floor. Your floor looks like it has a limed finish so the challenge for you will be to get the job to look good without having to refinish the entire floor! Check your table and chairs for metal !

    Thanks Matthew and John is it? I thought the same Matthew, we got the floor revarnished by some non- flooring specialists and I think they did a patchy job. Then when the floor is cleaned, there is a reaction and these come through.

    Interesting point John, my husband agrees with you as it is localised to specific areas and not all of the floor as he would expect. Unfortunately there is nothing nearby and definitely nothing metal. I think we will need to get a proper revarnish.

    Some of those photos look like mildew, some of them look like the ferrous metal/tannin reaction mentioned above. You say it happens when the floor is cleaned, ie gotten wet? Oak is such an open pored wood, unless it's well finished with very many coats the pores can remain open and take in water, so avoid getting it too wet. Also possible that the floor was refinished using wire wool, which if it left small bits could cause the tannins reaction.

    I would sand down the entire length of the board and pick a few random boards to do as well that way it will hopefully blend it in then revarnish it.

    To be honest it could be both of the above, floor gets wet, perhaps whatever is holding the boards in place comes in contact with the water and thus the situation you have occurs

    Perhaps an oil based varnish, maybe with a slightly darker finish?
