Missing something else...

This room is missing something and I am at a mental roadblock. It is the first room you enter when coming up the stairs. My primary colors is light blue. I am not really a fan of curtains as I have a 2 year old or plants. please help (disregard the wire...Their temporary)

    To be honest, curtains would be safer. Children have been known to get tangled up in blind cords. You have a smaller window on a big wall. Get light blocking curtains (I got mine at Walmart-cheap and really nice, linen-ish!) then get a long rod. Hang it as close to the ceiling as you your curtains will allow (the bottom of the curtain should be about 1/2-1" above floor) and extend the rods so that the curtain can be easily pushed all the way to the edge of the edge of the window. You will get a lot more light that way, even if you decide to add sheers for privacy. These are 42" x 95" & $14. I have a large front window and got a special package of 4 of these for not much more than the price of 2! Once things slow down at home, I'll stitch 2 pairs together but right now, it doesn't show that much. They have 4.3 out of 5 start with nearly 3000 ratings. And ivory will keep them from being all you see.

    You do need some surfaces in the room - end table/coffee table - just make sure they're kid friendly, meaning no glass (fingerprints) or sharp edges. You are also missing task lighting. Getting those surfaces will give you a place for a table lamp or two. With a child, a floor lamp probably isn't a good idea so stick with table or wall lights. Get a coffee table that is open and put wicker baskets in. This will provide a place for toys that your child can easily get into and also learn to put back! Here's a nice one from Wayfair for $240! Can't tell for sure what color it is so, if it isn't right, it's something to look for.

    Couldn't help but add this lamp. Really brings out the paintings. $104 at Overstock.

    Rug? You've a lot of black so something that brings out the blue and rust would be nice. If you get a pattern, it also might help to hide any messes the little one might make. This is a 7'x7' from Overstock for $280.

    I really like the paintings but not sure about them being separated. If the saying hadn't been there, I'd have suggested an accent color. They aren't hung level, either. I might consider getting a rail or shelf about 8' long or the length of the wall, that would match the TV stand and running it just below the bottom of the TV. Then rehang the pictures so they look like they're resting on top of it. If the rail doesn't go wall to wall, just make sure the pictures sit near the outside edges. Anyway, it might make it look more cohesive. The TVs a little high but I'm guessing you did that so you can see it from the kitchen. I tried to find a pic but can't. If you want, just pick up a couple of shorter dark shelves and use them but make sure they are level and close to inline with the bottom of the TV. Also, don't make them real shelves (go narrow) because you aren't actually setting anything on top of them. IDK, I'm waffling because I can't really figure out what to do. :) Are you a homeowner? You might want to get an accent paint color (pick up one of those $3 paint samples) and tape off rectangles larger than the paintings (once you level them). Paint the inside one of the colors from the paintings and center the paintings inside. This will give them the size they really need. They just aren't big enough to notice thus....drawing attention through color or a rail or something.

    Get the lamps, coffee table, curtains and hang the pictures level and see if you still need anything.

      its missing a coffee table. maybe an ottoman with tray would work best, for the kiddo. also I think the paintings with there size and scale might look better flanking the windows, since you dont want curtains. Making a collage wall around the tv would be better. and the painting would balance the window.

      All of the furniture is on the perimeter of the room so a coffee table would be very helpful to add some interest and function to the room. The unit under the television appears very small by comparison with the size of the television and the two posters on either side of the tv are also large. If you relocate the two posters to the window wall - one on either side of the window, it would balance out the window wall. If the tv is lowered a bit over the entertainment piece, this would make the tv and entertainment piece relate better and not be so imbalanced.

      The arts are hung too high.

      The height they are now would be OK, if the console was very long and the art was hanging above the console. Speakers might be placed under the arts or lower the arts.

      IDK how high the ceiling is & that's another variable.

      I'd take the art off the wall for now and make newspaper templates of their dimensions & move the templates around.

      From here I'd say lower the arts about 9 inches, but it's difficult to say from here. :)

      1-2 apothecary lamps at each sofa might help + a large palm in the corner + I might use only the aqua and rust pillows on the sofas and not the other colored or patterned pillows. Combine the aqua and rust pillows with 1 pillow on each sofa that repeats the rug color (? gray).

      Curtains would fill in the space nicely, possibly in a flax or linen tone. A circular coffee table would soften and break up the lines of the space. I would do the coffee table with a silver finish with possibly a glass top. This would lighten the space, and add some dimension!

      She has a 2 year old. As much as I like the "airiness" of a glass table, I think it and a silver finish would be a disappointing choice. Dark wood = durability and no fingerprints.

      You need some sort of coffee table, maybe an ottoman. Also I think curtain panels will soften the room. Although you have carpet you could put in an area rug with light blue and another accent colour.
