Driveway Gates

Has anyone here by any chance had driveway gates installed? I've chosen gates from www.express-gates.co.uk and they are coming in at around £800 but I'm not getting much sense online in terms of installing electric systems for opening them.

Is there a system out there which anyone here would recommend? And do I need a specialist installer? I'm in Scotland, near Glasgow.

    Hi Martin,

I hope your Mondays going well. We specialise in Automated Gates. Sadly we don't work in your area. However, we would strongly recommend looking for a specialist installers as incorrectly installed gates can be dangerous, to the point where many in the industry are asking the government to introduce planning permission requirements for electric gates.

As far as motors go you can choose between above ground motors and below ground. Below ground motors are more expensive but as they're hidden many people find them more attractive. Above ground motors can be a cheaper option however you will be able to see them on your gate. We usually choose FAAC motors. You may also want to think about what type of intercom system you would like.

We Would suggest you contact Citadel Gates in Telford Shropshire.

I hope this is of some help to you! Portcullis.

Hello, we too use FAAC as well as BFT for our automated gates. Unfortunately, we to are too far away (Devon!). We sometimes search fitters and installers on a site called Gate-safe. Handy as you can see reviews etc of different companies.

I would strongly recommend you take advise on safety. Depending on what the gate material is determines what power automation is required (230v usually for timber, 24v for metal/ wrought iron). 24v system is safer due to lower force etc. Areas prone to entrapment will need safety edges etc so plan on spending a few more extra £££'s on this. The actual automation manufacturers are really the ones to take advise from as they can advise the best kit suited to the gate size/ weight and also what safety system should be used. For us tho, we would only use BFT or FAAC...be careful of companies selling cheap Chinese systems!

    Hi there,

We use CAME for automating driveway gates, they are the leaders in their field. The opening configuration of the gate (swing, sliding etc) will dictate what motor needs to be used. As highlighted above, it is strongly advised that you seek the knowledge of an approved gate installer in your area, check the gate safe website as these are fully qualified professionals who will give you sound advice.

I hope this is of help!

    Regards,
