Tv room major help needed!!! Pics included

My husband purchased this awful, hideous sofa for the tv room. The chair on either side is a 'lazy boy' style. Unfortunately it's the first room anyone sees when they come by. How can I balance out the room and draw attention AWAY from the sofa. Do I need another chair? A different sized coffee table? Should the rug be round? I've put in different pieces as ideas for sizing. I also need to buy cushions once i decide on a colour. There is a dark brown bookshelf along the wall to the right.

This room had so much potential and uggghh.

My first suggestion is to move the sofa one turn to the right, so that it is not in front of the window if the size works for that. You would also not see so much of the sofa as you walk by the room. This would then allow you to put drapes on the window to compliment a rug. I would suggest some pattern in both the drapes and rugs.

I would then move both storage/tv units, they look like they match, to one wall and combine with the mirrors perhaps to create a wall of this type of unit. Because your room is dwarfed by the large sectional I would not add any more seating, limit the space to the sectional, coffee table and storage/tv wall.

I like your first octagon table and I think perhaps a rug with some design by still light in colour would work.

Finally invest in artwork that you love, sofa is his, artwork is yours:) and that will draw your eye towards that and away from the sofa. Cushions and throws can also lessen the impact of the black.

That's a lot of sofa, but the positive aspect is, it looks really comfortable. Nobody should have to sit on the floor!

My strong instinct would be to remove the mirrors in the back and replace them with artwork -- something bold with immediate visual impact and color, to draw the eye away from the brown. Blue/greens would provide contrast; orange/golds would blend more and coalesce. I'm attaching three samples of my work -- The Land of Chief Joseph, Flecks of Gold, and Forever Yours -- as options of representational art that takes you places (which is one of the things that art does so well).

When it comes to artwork, you want to take your time and find something with which you fall in love, because as you can see by looking at your wall, whatever you put there will command the eye of people who enter. Original paintings are lifetime investments that pay back dividends all through your life, but they do have a price factor. You can find high quality prints as well, with a better selection online than what you find in many stores themselves, with their limited shelf space.

For more representational art, you can find my originals on Houzz at http://bit.ly/2jVB27K. Prints of many of the originals are on Houzz at http://bit.ly/2lq283f and the Great Big Canvas site -- http://bit.ly/1xSXDCP.

My first thought is to replace the lamp with something modern and exciting. here is an example:

I agree with the others talking about large artwork over the sofa to minimize it.

I first noticed the coffee table and felt that the wood with the large black expanse with sofa was too dark and stark. I think a large round upholstered ottoman or a pair of square smaller upholstered ottomans in a colorful print would be a good choice, They would serve of course as a place to put your feet but also could be a coffee table-maybe with a tray. Plus they make great extra seating. I would not buy other chairs for the room.

Lots of good suggestions here already, but I just want to chip in that you need a more striking (and also larger) replacement for the coffee table, whether it's another table or some combination of ottomans. Look for something with some presence, maybe grained wood, that's large enough to really use from all seats. Then you can also put some decorations or books there to help draw the eye.

Some nice lamps, artwork or gallery wall over the sofa, and a better coffee table might just help this room. Look to our designs below for some inspiration.

Don't give up, pillows on your sofa will mask the sea of black. Using all the advice you've been given start with the art. You can stay neutral or pick your favorite color. Add textured light pillows with colors from your art. Don't buy more black furniture. Use a lighter wood or metal coffee table.

Could we see the TV wall and the wall opposite the window, please?

He's dominated the seating, so now its your turn to add your personality! With the lazy boy seats you can't make much use of a coffee table and there's already a cup holder for that part of the sofa. Just get a "C" table for someone on the other end to use. Replace the mirrors with one or two pieces of art you'd die for. If he will indulge you in the art like he indulged himself in the sofa, then he can have a monster TV next year. Seems a shame to have a "media room" sofa and a tiny TV. More pix of the room will result in better suggestions.

It's not so bad. Let's go a little tribal, a little industrial, a little rustic. I guess that would be eclectic.

Your have some really good advice here. Just a few more comments. Don't add any more furniture with a solid presence (like those ottomans). You have enough of that. Can you remove some of the sections of the sectional? Do they come in pieces? A round coffee table fits into the curve of the sectional. Keep it substantial so it is in proportion to the sofa. Make the top solid, but keep the legs open, metal would be good. If there is a lower shelf, make it glass, otherwise it will be too heavy. I suggest keeping the walls light (like you have them). The sofa is too big to add more black. Dramatic art work is a must and draperies would balance the weight of the sofa, drawing the eye up. Keep the drapes similar in color to the wall with perhaps an accent of black towards the top of the drape. Beneaththeaves photo is a great idea for draperies. Do not use small accessories in this room. Keep is clean and simple. Make every piece, from the cushions (lots of cushions) to the lighting, to the artwork, coordinate. That is, keep the design tight, make a statement. As you see it now, all you really have is the sofa so it stands out.

So, a year later and here is where we are at...thank you all for your helpful comments.

I thought it’d be nice to update the image.

Due to a flood, We had to replace floor and ended up changing the whole colour scheme of the House! Now to many of your professional eyes, it may not be perfect, however, I have to say, I love it! It’s a great wee TV den!

Nice that you turned the sofa to look out the window. Love the new colors. Have you thought about hanging that floor mirror over the sofa opposite the window to double the view?

    Wow! Wow! Wow!

    That’s a great idea!!!

I had that mirror spare in my bedroom, it may be too narrow for that wall as it’s quite high!

However I’l certainly start looking into a bigger one that would work there!

    Many thanks!

Quite an improvement. I, personally, don't care for mirrors in a living room. I would take the large mirror out of the room. I would put larger, more colorful, art over the sofa. The two smaller pieces could be hung together on a smaller wall area.

Thanks, I’m actually waiting for my second son to be born in a few weeks, then I’m going to put bigger black and white shots of the two boys there. We just put up those caricatures in the meantime, for a bit of fun! I have to say, I love mirrors everywhere!
