BTW this isn't a foot stool, it's 5 feet long (though only one foot as you see here!) It's at 1stdibs LA...

You need to change the lighting and add more light to your space. It would look nice if you add wood to your space. Possibly a rich colored wide plank engineered floor, and matching office furniture. Maybe a couple midcentury statues. Add some black and yellow color as a feature. You could also change the ceiling tiles to ceiling tiles with a different design or paint color... Take a look at our website for some design ideas www.goldconconstruction.ca Good luck!

Hi, Maybe this could be interesting:

WALLS: Wallpaper the walls with subtle stripe wallpaper - hang the stripes horizontally.

SHELVES/STORAGE: Across the entire right wall, hang classic Swedish string shelves (designed by Nisse Strinning 1949) (shelves should be in wood) http://www.string.se/imagebank/highres/STRING-014326.jpg

Add mid-century knick-knacks (with similar theme – cats for example) among whatever needs to go on the shelves, books office stuff etc.

DESK: Turn the desk so that you sit with your back towards the shelves. If possible switch out the desk for a mid-cent type in similar wood as the shelves and the chair to something like Arne Jacobsen’s “Seven” 1955. This is my favorite but it could be a bit uncomfortable since it isn’t very cushy but there are plenty of chairs out there to choose from. There were some very nice desks in some of the other comments.

BAR: Place a small bar to the left against the left wall (close to the viewer of the picture). Example. http://www.lauritz.com/sv/auktion/kurt-oestervig-1912-1986-barskaap-palisander/i2414143/?ReturnUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lauritz.com%2FItemList%2FItemList.aspx%3FLanguageId%3D3%232414143EndTagRU

LOUNGE AREA: A lounge area in the far corner of the left wall (near the door) with furniture, either by Arne Jacobsen – the swan couch and chairs/swan egg combo: https://www.google.com/search?q=arne+jacobsen+swan+chair&client=safari&rls=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=itRLU8KyJNHIsASex4CACA&ved=0CEUQsAQ&biw=1264&bih=759
or something by Peter Hvidt (this example designed 1957 and is too big for the space but to get an idea of the style follow this link: http://www.lauritz.com/sv/auktion/peter-hvidt-orla-moelgaard-soffgrupp-minerva-3/i2595500/
Nice with some chairs that can easily be moved over to the desk if you would need to talk to someone like that.

LIGHTING: (Poul Henningsen – best! PH 4/3 on the desk and a floor lamp from the same series by the lounge area. http://www.louispoulsen.com/usa/products/indoor/table/ph-43-table.aspx

ART: Add some beautiful artwork on the wall opposite the shelves by a contemporary artist like Klari Reiss: http://www.klarireis.com (Street anatomy series) or David Korty (his LA scenes)

    PLANTS: Don’t forget plants

GOOD LUCK and post the results :)

Does it count as mid-century if you take the front end of mid-century vehicle and turn it into your desk?

Mid-century: Think low profile, angular, minimalist. Think Mad Men set. See attached image. Simple desk. A sitting area is a must. Look at the awesome, comfy desk chair. Drum lampshades. Almost a Japanese sensibility.

Why have an office? That is like... last century. If you really need to spend the cash on decorating an unused space, just get a coffee maker of your choice and set it on a two drawer file cabinet. All the best.

Keep the white walls. Besides being a midcentury touch, it looks like a small space and an airy feel would be good. Buy a beautiful vintage Danish teak desk and place a Louis Poulsen lamp on it (Paul Henningsen.) If you can find a vintage teak wall unit, that would be a classy touch. Alternately, you could get a Gus Wilson cabinet which is modern and immensely cool. (It's not midcentury but blends well with especially if you like modern mixed with midcentury.)
An Eames lounge chair with a cool side table would be great ... A womb chair in a masculine dark grey fabric would make a wow statement.
A "bullet" planter would look nice in a corner of the room.
Not sure if you're going to include some glasses/barware but Iittala's Ultima Thule or Tapio are classic designs that would fit the look.
Art work is very personal, but something with a punch of colour (even a framed poster) would be great.
Good luck with your project! What fun!!

    Mr. Kutcher,
My first step will be to ask how you plan to use this space? Private reflection? Meetings? Writing? The solutions will emerge naturally from your answers to these and other related questions. Once the purposes are supported, then we can explore the more emotional aspects of decoration. You have to see yourself working in this space and enjoying a psychological comfort that will support the work you will be doing. Make sense?

I would start with one piece, to start the story. Use something like one of these as a jump off point, and then art, rugs. Maybe a funky lucite desk. Comfy chairs with a classic teak, leather combo. Coolio wallpaper perhaps, certainly some colour pop somewhere. Enjoy! So fun!

Ok so deciding on ultimate use for space is empirical, but taking the idea of mid century modern and adding a eclectic twist...how about using a wall of glass and use as water art as shown in first picture, offsetting nature with an electric blue decor integrating lacquered walls and lacquered furniture creating texture in same shade blue. Throw in a few lighting ideas such as these, creating a ultra modern mid century space utilizing both natural and processed elements. Add in a media wall- imagine a giant touch screen iPhone wall to share/work on projects. An artwork piece such as this Chris Bacey Thrills to bring mid century moden will add inspiration. Some of these chairs.

What a great space...I've always loved those fish bowl offices, however - they offer no privacy when needed. I would definitely recommend installing draperies, which will add texture to the space. Given the size of the space, you could fill it up with club chairs, sofa, bookshelves, a credenza and I would also recommend another desk/table that serves for more collaborative thought!
