CLEANING TIPS
FLIES ...Anyway, I was living in the house with a group of artists and we had an art business teaching painting and selling paints etc....I couldn't stand the flies, green tree frogs in the kitchen OK but not FLIES. One of the girls with us read up on what colours deterred what insects.....Flies hate bright yellow-orange! So we got it together and painted the whole big kitchen a bright yellow-orange which we mixed up ourselves because we could not find it in any paint catalogue and it had to be the right hue. Guess what? NO MORE FLIES and all the windows open! It works even with a square of either ply or heavy card painted on both sides and dangling from a string from the ceiling where the breeze will twirl it around. A creative person might be able to design some sort of decorative whirlygig thing that would not look so silly. I have painted my present kitchen in the same yellow/orange...no screens here either. This might be something you can use.
One of the least expensive and best solutions to cleaning your shower and sinks of soap scum is to mix equal parts of white vinegar and dawn dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray everything down and allow to soak for a while then you will be absolutely amazed at how easily everything just wipes clean. And as another commenter suggested, we always use a squeegee on the clear shower doors to help keep them clear longer.
o Lynn Newman and Jon Nail, I forbid the use of soap in the showers, only body wash is allowed (got that tip on Houzz). I clean the glass doors with a combination of 50-50 Dawn and cleaning vinegar, then follow it with a steam cleaner with a squeegee attachment (McCullough brand, you can get it at Home Depot for about $150, best investment ever). Then apply RainX to the now extremely clean glass door. Clean once/week with Windex, add more RainX and your doors will be sparkly! I don't have to do this quite this often as we have wonderful Rocky Mountain snow melt for our water. But it does work in So Cal, where I used to live and has extremely hard water.
I used polished pure white Thassos marble on my powder room floor, with black absolute granite small squares scattered through the joints for a classic look. What a mistake! Even though the marble was sealed, urine stains around the commode will not come out. Now I have to keep a throw rug in place to hide those stains. November 5, 2015 PRO Grout Works of Central NJ To remove urine stains from marble use 40% hydrogen peroxide available at you local beauty supply store. Let it dwell on area for a number of hours if necessary. Sometimes an overnight poultice with baby powder and hydrogen peroxide is necessary but it will almost always remove the stain. However it will leave a dull spot although with no yellow color. The dull spot can be refinished by a natural stone restoration professional by honing with diamonds and polishing it. We restore marble like carrara and many other natural stones here in NJ. I bought a 5-liter container of auto glass cleaner. Yup. That's right. The stuff you put in your car. What I bought is bio degradable. I also bought a window squeegee just for auto windows. Then I cleaned all the windows except those on the very top of veranda. That is what they call it in France. I call it a green house that is attached. It has 3 walls made of glass with 6 heavy duty sliding doors that open it up entirely to the outside. It's just over 12-feet wide and about 36 feet long. The entire job, both inside and out, took 2 hours and 20 minutes. It has rained several times since then. The glass is beautiful because it can't be seen. I dried it with micro-fiber cloths. This is the only way I will clean windows ever again. It works perfectly. It is easy to do and to clean up. Finally the job lasts for so much longer than using window cleaning products or vinegar. I also use the Karcher system.. Best ever, my windows are spotless with minimal effort. I use their cleaning liquid, washer tool and squeegee. I’m in Canada; I purchased it at Canadian Tire. Rinse the outsides of your windows with your garden hose, then use a spray bottle with mixture of Rinse Aide (the sa...
Bar Keepers Friend at Canadian Tire On white marble definitely DON"T USE WINDEX. Especially if it's polished marble. Windex contains ammonia which can break down the polish and WILL ETCH (water marks etc) marble..I recommend that my clients use a simple solution of soap and water or a cleaner that I provide with my kitchens called Easy Oxy. I buy it from a friend who is a restoration pro and fabricator in California. He sells it through his website http://easystonecare.com . Here's a direct link to the product. http://www.easystonecare.com/Easy-Oxy-Granite-Countertop-Daily-Cleaner-32-oz-p/easy-oxy-1.htm **This cleaner has an orange scent but is citrus and acid free. As far as the alcohol, you won't harm the surface in any way with alcohol but you may degrade whatever sealer was applied. Also, be careful on products (including alchol) with fragrances as they sometimes contain acids. Again things to STAY AWAY FROM when caring for white marble: - Acids - Including but not limited to cleaners with Citrus or vinegar - Ammonia - such as windex, glass plus etc. - Harsh Cleansers such as bar keepers friend, or ajax (soft scrub with b...
Meguiar's Rich Leather cleaner and conditioner is great. I got it when we bought a black leather king sized bed from Ikea. It had been wrapped up in plastic and the smell of the leather chemicals drove me crazy. A couple of cleanings and letting the bed air worked like a charm. I've also used the cleaner on my 70+ year old leather seats on dining room chairs. The product gets the seats clean and conditions the leather. None of the leather items are in sunlight. Leather Master is all I approve of. They have a nice website & can order directly from them. I usually clean & condition before the AC comes on in summer, & then again before heat comes on in winter. Be careful of Windows & heating vents being too close to leather. Also, someone going through chemo should never sit on leather. Keep blue jeans off as well as inks from magazines & newspapers. 1 Like
Commercial leather cleaning brands recommended by some furniture makers include Lexol, Mohawk, Leather Master and Leather Magic. If you want to keep the leather soft and supple, after cleaning and occasionally after that, you can apply a commercial leather conditioner. Brown recommends applying a good leather conditioner every six to 12 months. “This will help your leather piece maintain its own natural oils, keeping it soft and supple for many years,” she said. Brands she recommends include Leather Master, Mohawk and Leather Magic. She also advises checking the care label on the furniture before using any commercial product. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification advises avoiding conditioning oils that contain silicone or wax, which can make the surface permanently sticky.
Banish Burn Marks If you have some burn marks that just won’t come off your stainless steel stove, try this simple DIY recipe: 1 cup baking soda ¼ cup lemon juice 3 tablespoons Borax Club soda (for rinsing) Combine the first three ingredients to make a cleaning paste. Apply this paste to the entire stained area with a soft cloth. Scrub in the same direction as the grain of the stainless steel. Rinse with club soda and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.
