Bathroom Ideas
Before: Khuong was meticulous about getting the composition of these tiles just right. “I took photographs of each tile, put them in photo-editing software and rotated them around to get the right pattern. Then I labeled each tile and noted how to orient it,” she says. The result is a seamless look. This is the difference that hiring a designer can make — especially a designer who has an equally meticulous tile installer on call.

To minimize soap scum in the shower, the MIA recommends using a squeegee after each use to wipe away the water and residue. It also suggests cleaning with a nonacidic residue remover or solution of ammonia and water (about one-half cup ammonia to 1 gallon water), but warns that frequent use or overuse of an ammonia solution may eventually dull the surface of the stone. So, take it easy. Laney also recommends carefully sealing the marble in the bathroom area. “Especially in the pan of a shower,” she says. “That’s really where the most wear and tear is going to happen in a bathroom. And don’t use bleach. If you bleach it, it will break the shine down. Stick to soap and water.”
Install rectangular tile vertically to visually enhance the height of a ceiling. Here, glazed clay tile in a warm gray tone for the shower walls delivers the effect. “We chose to lay the shower tile in a vertical stack to make the room appear a bit taller while also giving a more modern flair,” Schaffner says. “This tile is the perfect match to the cleaner-looking floor tile because it has character and texture that adds some depth and richness.”
I love this article. Thank you. I like to go to open houses, and I see the same model bathroom in different houses, and I can't figure out why one is so claustrophobic, when they are the same size and configuration. One thing I often wonder is if changing the standard vanity depth, instead of the standard 21", make it 18"? Is that done, or would it be too narrow?
niche derrière la baignoire The wall at the end of the bathtub can be a good spot to place a recessed niche for towels.
Install a niche on the inside shower wall for toiletries etc. visible only to the person from in the shower.
Recessed storage set between wall studs. She had her contractor build a cabinet into the wall studs behind the door, and that solved her storage dilemma. Here you can see the recessed cabinet storage behind the bathroom door. The cabinets hold cleaning supplies, extra toothpaste and soap, and can even hold toilet paper rolls, as long as they’re not the big fluffy kind. A linen closet across the hall also adds storage.

You can custom built wall hung vanity (floating vanity). Most cabinet makers will built them to specifications. They are great. Its easy to clean the floor. I usually install a LED lighting tube under the cabinets, to light up the tile on the floor. Houzz also sells "wall hung vanities".
Because modern bathrooms tend toward lots of clear glass, be sure to get the special glass coating to reduce unsightly water spots and soap scum, otherwise it will only look good in the professional photographs!

You can create a tiled access panel that sits flush with tiling but is fixed to a pice of ply and attached using magnets. Instead of grouting the access panel in, you use a silicone joint that can be easily cut for access without damaging the tiles.

I don't see much room for guest towels in any of the rooms except #4. Since my powder room gets used most when there are guests, I provide a basket of rolled up white facecloths on the counter and a small wicker laundry basket on the floor, primed with one crumpled cloth. This leaves the wall clear of towel bars, takes very little counter space, and gives each guest a fresh mini-towel to dry their hands.
How High to Hang the Towel Bar Towel bars can be mounted between 36 and 42 inches (91 to 107 centimeters) above the floor along their horizontal centerline. If you are taller or use extra-large bath sheets, consider raising them to 48 or 50 inches (122 to 127 centimeters). Most ceilings will be 8 feet high in smaller bathrooms.
Tub length. The typical tub length is 5 feet, and your bathroom could be slightly wider than that. If this is the case, you can install a longer tub or create a niche to fill the extra space, as in this design.

1. Plumbing Residential plumbing typically uses 1½-inch pipes for drains. You’d be surprised how much gunk and hair goes down that drain. The larger the drain, the less likely it is to clog. The cost difference to upgrade to a 2-inch drain is practically negligible, and unless your framing doesn’t allow for it, you should consider increasing the drain in your shower to 2 inches.
Pretty Little Tray Corralling things on trays is a staple decorator trick. If you don’t already have a small tray you could use, keep an eye out at flea markets for vintage trays. Setting your soap and bud vase on a pretty little ceramic or silver tray will make your powder room setup look intentionally designed.
Vase of Flowers In the powder room (already a small space), a mini bouquet can make a big impression. Place a bud vase or other small vessel (cream pitchers and julep cups work well) on the sink and fill it with a few stems of freshly cut flowers. And if you have a bouquet in another room already, just pull out a few stems for the powder room — no need to buy anything extra.
Scent Diffuser You may not feel comfortable leaving a lit candle in the powder room during a party, especially if children are present. But having a pleasing scent in the space is a gracious detail. Choose a scent diffuser in a subtle fragrance and set it on the sink or a nearby shelf. You’ll get all the good vibes without the flame.
Orchids Longer lasting than a bouquet of flowers and undeniably elegant, orchids make a smart choice for the powder room. While rare varieties of orchids can be expensive, you can often find budget-friendly potted orchids right in your local grocery store. Orchids like bright indirect light, so a sink by a shaded window would be ideal.

The vanity was too heavy to float off the wall, so the designers came up with a clever way to get a similar look. “The cabinetry area is built on a tiled platform to give it the appearance that it floats,” Levant says.
BH is right. I ruined the electrical wiring on an Italian crystal chandelier once after spraying it with a cleaner that let the dust drip off. After it was rewired, I learned this trick: put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and spray each element (in my case the crystals) one at a time and use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe dry. It takes time and a ladder, but the alcohol dries so quickly it won't ruin your chandelier - and you only have to do it once or twice a year, depending on climate.
If you have more space, a room within a room allows for multiple users. Frosted doors let light flow from one room to the other while preserving privacy.
I keep the toothbrushes/toothpaste in a drawer by the sink separated in a plastic silverware holder.
Organize with apothecary jars. Bathrooms are practical rooms with a functional purpose, and most of us have a myriad of personal items stashed throughout ours. Organize these everyday items in a more elegant way by storing essentials such as cotton balls, swabs and bath salts in classic glass apothecary jars.

Splurge on scents and soaps. Have you ever swooned over the yummy-smelling soaps in a fancy hotel or restaurant restroom? Making the small investment in a lavish hand soap is probably one of the easiest ways to add some luxury to your bathroom. This spa-like touch can cost as little as $15 for a bottle of dreamy essential-oil hand soap. Look to your big-box, discount and online vendors for cost-saving options.
2. Glam up your mirror. If you have a plain bathroom mirror in the standard rectangle or square shape, look for an alternative with more stylish details. This one is a great example: Its elegant flower shape gives the room a more designed look. Beach Style Bathroom by Holst Brothers General Contractors Holst Brothers General Contractors Selecting a mirror with a glitzy finish, such as gold, or a jewel-like multifaceted rim can really transform your vanity wall. Decorative wall mirrors can cost as little as $150, depending on their size. For a highly styled look, pair your glam mirror with fashionable sconces.
Choose statement lighting. Whether it’s a glittering chandelier or wall-mounted sconces, try swapping ordinary lighting for a fixture that makes a stylish statement. Hanging a chandelier in the middle of the room or over a soaking tub can make a stunning and luxurious impact, as shown here in this all-white bathroom. The crystal chandelier with a dark iron base gives the room an expensive glow without detracting from the clean white palette. Traditional Bathroom by Blackband Design Blackband Design You don’t have to use a chandelier to make a statement with lighting. Dazzling pendant lights or wall sconces above a sink can give your ordinary bathroom a jewel box atmosphere, and they can be found for $200 and up. Look for something with a distinct and artful look that complements the rest of your bathroom hardware. Here, the reflective glass sconces coordinate with the chrome hardware and bring a more sophisticated atmosphere to this fairly simple bathroom.
Door mounts. Don’t neglect any square inch in your quest to maximize comfort and functionality in your bathroom. Especially in a small bathroom, thinking beyond wall space to take advantage of doors and even windowsills can improve flow and open up design possibilities.
