Répondre à Thank you Heidi, we use the smaller 3" cans on most projects and I like to use PHILIPS EcoVantage Haolgen bulbs. They carry a narrow spot and a flood bulb. They also have them for 4" and 5" cans. They are rated at 50W but only use 39W in measurable power.

Répondre à For recessed we always use Halogen bulbs and the bulb connections are the same as LED so the fixture is the same. Coupled with under-counter lighting they work perfect in any kitchen. Usually in a bathroom we have recessed coupled with a light mounted above the mirror to give you more direct and even lighting on the face. For our projects we use a minimum of two light sources in a bathroom and three in a kitchen. We also mix Halogen with incandescent and sometimes LED but the LED has to provide the right kind of light in order for it to be part of any of my projects. Lighting is the key to any project. I can make a gutted kitchen look inviting with the right lighting and take a $100,000 kitchen and ruin it with the wrong lighting. As far as heat factor it has never been an issue and for bulb life in my own house I have had Halogen bulbs in some cans for over 10 years. We use smart dimmers on all the lighting so there is no abrupt on/off effect.

Répondre à Halogen wins out hands down. Both bulbs may give off similar color temperatures but that is to a mechanical register, not the naked eye. The main difference between the light is the highlights and lowlights that are given off. Halogen has a much stronger directional and grade to the light where LED has almost no highlight to lowlight. Also, LED lights have not been taken out of the blue effect. They are not much better than florescent, they still have a blue tinge to everything they light up. You can see in the photo how dramatic the lighting in the hallway is. This effect could never be attained by using LED

Répondre à That probably depends on what kind of valance (soffit?) but generally you can put TC fixtures within 1/2" clearance of drywall or joists. If there's room for some air to circulate around the housing, you're probably okay. NOTE: The answer changes if the valance is actually part of an attic structure (you might need air-tite or AirLoc type cans to reduce heat loss). If you have insulation present in the space, then you need to hold it back 3" on all sides from a TC or non-IC housing, build a drywall box around the housing, or get an IC housing.

Répondre à I installed 3" recessed cans into my master bathroom area 3 over the 6 ft vanity area, 2 in the shower area, plus 2 more in different spots. I love the light that the halogens put out. But If I were you I would go with a larger can. I have a small room 14' x 8 or so its a strange shape room plus I am going to install 2 wall sconces. But I have dark spots in the room that would drive me nuts in a kitchen. I don't think your going to be happy with the light level in your kitchen. If you don't want to see the cans choose a white trim. If you have already purchased these try and line them up in front of some focal point. Then add bigger ones for general lighting Mine are directional so I can tilt them a bit and bounce them off the wall.

Répondre à your problem is not the level of light from the LED recessed lights, but rather the usef the white baffles that have been installed. The introduction of the white baffle has destroyed more lighting designs that you can count. Your eye is drawn to the "glare" created by the white baffle. Replace the trims will clear alzak or haze trims and you'll be amazed with the difference

Répondre à The recessed lights are 3" -- and there are a lot of them! (Contractor & electrician wanted bigger ones, but I followed Candice Olson's advice and went with smaller; glad I did!) Most of the time I don't need them on, but on dark winter days/nights it's great to have extra light. (Install dimmer switches on everything.) Also per Candice, we placed the recessed lights 12" out from the upper cabinets - not centered over walkways like many people will tell you. This lights the workspace and not the top of your head.
