9. It can be a featureIn a subdued neutral palette, a grey sofa adds weight to balance out airy whites or creams, and emphasises the subtle undertones in the surrounding neutrals. The contrast between light and dark, cool and warm, and various textures is what gives this room visual variety and interest, and so the strong grey sofa anchors this scheme in a key way. A grey sofa in particular (as opposed to other furniture) also gives you lots of wiggle room, as you can lighten the look with a draped blanket and toss pillows until the effect is just right.
Close the curtains on theWhile display is great, direct sunlight can damage shoes, and dust can be tough to get out of fabrics like suede. Hanging a drapery panel in front of the shelves is an elegant solution. This is also a good idea for those who don’t like clutter. By using fabric that matches the wall paint and adding an integrated drapery track, the look is clean, cohesive and keeps the bedroom restful while maintaining easy access to the shoes.
I mean … this is dreamy. These boxes have label holders so you can insert a little photo of the shoes the box holds. Whenever I dream of having a personal assistant, this is the first task I imagine assigning them. Actually, it’s the only task that ever makes me dream of having a personal assistant. After they finish this, there really isn’t much of a list. But I digress – those of us who don’t have personal assistants could designate a Shoebox Saturday and get it done in one morning.

Sconces When table space is at a premium (or nonexistent), wall-mounted lights are your friend, giving you reading lights without stealing space from the table surface or floor, and giving you one less thing to bump into.

Build some handy bench seating A great way to incorporate extra seating is with a bench. Here, the table has been located next to the wall, so that a bench can be constructed beside it. Diners can either spread out, or cosy up, depending on how many of them need to fit around the table. If you’re going to have a bench made, you could use the opportunity to add some storage beneath the seating.

Hanging pot herb garden No window ledge? No problem. Create a row of hanging herb pots by fitting a rail in front of a window. Such an arrangement makes the most of the light and creates a natural privacy screen from neighbouring houses.
Indoor planter Designed to make indoor gardening simple and rewarding, indoor planters come in a variety of depths and sizes so you can position a mini-garden on top of your bench, or to the side of your cabinets if you’re short on bench space. This Glowpear planter is deep enough for you to grow herbs and salad leaves, and is self-watering – great for busy cooks and beginners alike. Just make sure there’s enough natural light – herbs won’t thrive without it.
This wall of bucket planters also counts as a living wall. A setup like this allows for experimentation, as different plant species can be tested out here and moved into the garden if they don’t thrive indoors. Empty spots look like part of the design rather than a result of indecision or poor plant tending. These planters would also be a terrific venue for a kitchen herb garden.
A living wall doesn’t have to be lush and chock-full of plants. Vines look just as swell in sparse wisps. Yes, this counts as a living wall!

Introduce exciting materials Give a small bedroom a pinch of ‘wow’ by working in interesting materials. The walls of this bedroom are clad with large pieces of honey-toned ply, bringing warmth and character to a very simply designed room. Try textured wallpaper or panelling for a similar result.
Small takes the spotlight Despite its compact size, this kitchen boldly took on grey floors, cabinets and backsplash – and Houzzers took notice. Many also like its lighting design.
Make sure your electrician and lighting designer are communicating regularly and you should have a much smoother project.
