I have an 8ft ceiling and previously had 36" cabinets. When I did my kitchen last summer, I chose 36" cabinets. Shiloh makes a 39" cabinet but it wasn't offered in all cabinets. I did a lot of measuring as I thought I wanted 42" cabinets. I decided I didn't like the look, and even the 36" cabinets I can't reach the top shelf (old age shrinking). When I realized that I'd need a ladder, not the kitchen stool, it was an easy decision.
Then the cabinets and their to-the-ceiling crown molding were installed and I was heart sick - it looked like I had soffits again. KD came over to talk me off the ledge, and we went to my garage where all the trim was being installed, and I grabbed a piece of "scrib" and we brought it up to the kitchen. KD held it up, the bottom edge of the scrib just covering the seam between top of cabinet and bottom of crown. What a difference! Here it is before the scrib:

Who knew a little piece of molding could make such a difference! The installer and KD liked it do well, they will do it again.
i don't think you will gain much useable storage with the 42" cabinets, and all you'll have at the top is this little piece of scrib. It just won't look very custom.
