A series of weathered fieldstone walls were installed to mimic natural stone outcroppings and fit the feel of the site beautifully. Using the popular, segmented concrete-block retaining wall systems here would have looked out-of-place.

Looking from the kitchen courtyard, a winding walkway connects to a patio off a renovated milk barn used as a guest house. Trellis and gardens flank the pathway and separate walk from the play lawns to the north. Careful alignment of the paths tie together the various elements of the architecture. This farmstead is located in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Photos by Ian Gleadle

This Carroll Gardens rooftop looks like home, sweet home to us with its cozy furniture, built-in ipe planters, string lights, and a pergola. The built-in planters contain Steed hollies, maiden grass, and Japanese forest grass. In the pergola area, black fiberglass planters contain Boston ivy to climb up the pergola posts. There is drip irrigation and low-voltage up-lighting included in all the planters for a dramatic nighttime effect. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.

My clients wanted a backyard retreat where they could make the most of their sloping pie shaped lot. We upgraded the gardens under the tree canopy with new focal points and seasonal interest, despite the shade. A new deck with pergola and custom privacy screen to give them a cozy space within a large yard. A pea gravel courtyard, one of the sunniest spots in the backyard created a nook in a previously unused part of the yard which provides a beautiful view of all their gardens.

This landscape garden won the 2014 Landscape Victoria Awards for “Plants In the Landscape”. With its natural Stingy Bark twisted trees, the design highlights and enhances these beautiful sculptural trees. The plants are the landscape, attracting wildlife and frogs, with evidence of children climbing and playing in this space. The use of north facing sun has been harnessed in the court yard close to the house, offering a completely different micro-climate, and protection from the southerly breeze. This landscape garden was in the Open Gardens Australia for a special twilight event in January 2014 & 2015. With features such as decking, stonewalls and plantings that are drought hardy and indigenous. Monies raised from these garden openings were donated to the Anglesea CFA. Plants in Landscape Award –Landscape Victoria Judge, Bryan Rankin- Lifetime Member said… “WOW! This is an exceptional garden. The plants in this garden are the landscape. The existing trees have been made features in the overall landscape, and new plantings have been done to compliment and further highlight the existing trees. The use of native plants in a structured manner has worked really well, and the retention of an undisturbed strip of indigenous vegetation has been sensitively incorporated into the landscape. It was also great to see that this was a space that was explored and utilised by the whole family.” Extra information Design by Sinatra Murphy and Peter Shaw Photo by Simone Shaw

Deer resistant plantings. This selection of perennials and shrubs are bearing up well under the pressure from a large herd of deer that frequently hang out in this open area. The perennials are astilbe, carex, evergreen autumn fern, hellebore, and variegated solomon's seal. Shrubs include abelia, itea, laurel, mugho pine and oak leaf hydrangea. Note that in different locations, some of these plants will be grazed by deer. Photo by Barbara Katz
