Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignNight view with low voltage pathway and garden lighting enhance the beauty of this expansive back yard landscape remodel that has been transformed into a relaxing outdoor retreat. The remodel includes a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. THE KING'S MASONSThe client had planned on a patio but had no way to get to it! A steep slope was converted to an impressive stairway to access the walkway and patio we installed. We also handpicked and installed boulders to retain the earth on the hill, provide planting areas, and add visual interest.
Juxtapose Design BuildDuring excavation for this new modern home, large granite boulders rose to the surface from the primordial hillside. Instead of displacing these monoliths from the site from which they were created, they were arranged to define space. A circle of boulders stand guard around a custom built fire pit, providing protection from the wind while offering a place to climb or sit. The extended landscape view from the lawn is kept intact by the introduction of a ha-ha, a traditional landscape feature, that hides the productive garden and keeps it from breaking the view. Native and drought tolerant plantings hug the outer edges of the property for minimal use of irrigation and to visually blend into the surrounding hillside. This project also features a custom ipe bench with integrated lighting, waterjet address numbers with night lighting, and hardscape that complements the form and materiality of the architecture to create a harmonious transition into the horizontal plane.

Luxuriant GardensRaised Cedar-faced Perennial Beds (constructed of pressure treated lumber) were constructed on either side of rear gate to reduce bed maintenance (annual lawn edging) and add interest to a backyard which originally had only a lawn and fence. The boxes were lined with landscape fabric to prevent weed intrusion from the wilderness area behind the fence and landscape fabric was also used to partially enclose the ornamental tree roots to prevent them from traveling into the bed.

Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignLagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. The plant medley includes Sea Lavender, Blue Oat Grass, Bulbine - Snake plant, Parrot's Beak and others.
