Exterior of chicken run and pots for herbs on new, graceful stairs. The old chicken coop and run was demolished and a new, custom coop and run were tucked under the deck. and stairs. Star Jasmine isplanted around the run-- not harmful to chickens. As it grows it will blend the run into the garden and create more shady areas for the chickens. Human access to the run is concealed as one of the frame squares. The frame will be painted to match the house trim color. Dark vinyl coated chicken wire was used to be less visually noticeable. The stair pots provide room for herbs to grow.

Robinson Environmental DesignFor all of the perimeter plantings that this garden had when we first visited the site, it felt exposed with very little privacy. The existing outdoor spaces were virtually nonexistent and hence, went unused. The stairs from the house to the garden were rickety and unattractive doing nothing but transport guests from the inside to the out. As with all of my gardens, the operative goal was Sanctuary in all of it's forms. Creating the sacred from the secular, making the cold and uncomfortable into the warm and inviting. The lot on which this garden was built is one filled with sharp angles that go unnoticed on a conscious level but come into sharp focus when all of the layers are stripped away. My first and most obvious solution was to pour custom circular pads that transport the client and her friends from area to area as if one is jumping from lily pad to lily pad. Small enough in spaces to transport a guest from area to area, large enough to hold a car, the exposed aggregate pads blend in with the multicolored Del Rio pebbles used throughout the garden. A tropical extravaganza, this garden is now the epitome of seclusion and privacy right in the middle of Venice, California.

Our re-design of the space included artificial turf to replace a failing lawn, updated plantings, overhead string lighting, and new lawn furniture. The existing plantings of boxwoods and birch trees, while healthy, were a little bland and boring looking, so we spiced up the plantings by adding more color, texture, and variety to the space. Our design plans included purple heuchera, gold hakone grass, creeping Jenny, rhododendrons, and a coral-bark maple tree. We picked a high-end, eco-friendly (petroleum free) artificial turf that looks exactly like real grass and is maintenance-free. A garden in an open, rural landscape shows several faces and stories. A multileveled wooded garden for summer parties in the cool of the forest. A small lake with floating wooden paths, which embrace sitting areas, a fireplace and an isle, from which one observes all different moods of nature. This garden is a romantic detail of Monets waterlilies, the light falling through the majestic trees, a piece of arcadia.
