As the summer season begins lenghthening into fall and the Astilbe plumes are now sturdy seed heads, the first line of defense between the road and the home grounds becomes more visible. The tan coloured foliage in the back ground is Panicum, commom name Switch grass.
A native of the American tall grass prairies, Switch grass is known for its stiff, upright form. It is sturdy enough to retain its form, and screening ability, throughout the growing season and, minus icy snows, into the New Year.
The beige flower panicles seen in this image are finely-textured, pink-tinged when new, and give the drift of plants the appearrance of an airy cloud. The cloud looks as though it is floating over the garden beds.
