Based in La Mesa, CA, with studios in Northern California servicing Sonoma and Napa counties and Southern California, Asquared Studios is a contemporary architectural design studio seeking to embrace projects that present challenges of vernacular living within the context of our modern environment. We believe that our clients come first, and that all projects require an interactive collaboration to develop an artfully crafted result. We are invigorated by the notion that the basic fundamentals of function and cost can be translated into sophisticated spaces, elegant details and environmental sustainability. By offering and providing a principal-led delivery system the founding partners have taken great care to shape their practice into a uniquely responsive and personable enterprise. I feel like we gave Jessie an impossible task. We converted our 800 square foot detached garage into an in-law unit for my father and asked Jessie to design it all. Keep in mind that we had to fit in a full kitchen, full bathroom, laundry facilities, home office space, living room, and bedroom. Oh, and it had to accommodate all the existing electrical, plumbing and physical restrictions of the pre-built structure. The design Jessie provided us utilized the space perfectly and is a wonderful space to live in. We couldn't be more happy.

I was very nervous about converting an existing building into a grandfather space. Not only did Asquared design the perfect living space for me, they (Jessie) held my hand every time I got nervous about trying to move from a regular home into a "tiny house". Her design made it easy and the best decision I ever made. Thanks, Asquared!!!

I consider Jessie Whitesides- Architect, of A2 Studios to be one of the most talented architects I have ever worked with. Choosing to build your home is a daunting task; Jessie understood our vision, understood all aspects of the building and permitting process, and was our advocate throughout the entire process from design to occupancy. I found Jessie to be solution oriented, a team player, responsive to both us and the general contractor, to mention a few things that made our project successful. Jessie was always willing to go the extra step and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her for any project, big or small!

Jessie designed our second, detached unit on our property and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The unit posed its unique challenges with how it was able to be designed and she worked through it in such a creative manner. The design was sound, aesthetically pleasing and of course, up to code. Jessie is a dream to work with as she is so professional, knowledgeable and she listens. She was transparent with us along every step of the way, communicating all aspects of the job. We will absolutely be using her again for any other architectural needs and highly recommend her.

My husband and I hired Jessie with Asquared Studios to do a full remodel of our house in Kenwood, CA. We described our vision and dream house to her and she came up with a beautiful and functional design. It incorporated all of the specific requests we had made, yet kept us within our budget. It is a leap of faith to go from a design on paper to the real thing, but I trusted Jessie. And the final product was excellent! I appreciated design ideas she made like taller door frames to give the house a larger look, and where to place windows for better light. We have been living in our remodeled house for close to five years now, and there is nothing I would change. I would highly recommend Jessie and Asquared Studios. Thank you Jessie for creating a perfect house for us.

This reminds me of the first day we walked into your house to dream up what was going to be possible. I remember your concerns intently as the house felt small and compressed with low ceilings and no site lines. One peak in the Attic told me that we would be able to achieve an open and organized plan with higher ceilings, brighter fresher colors, and even add a master suite. I am so pleased to see how your family has taken ownership of the new house and your constant recognition of how one element can affect another when it comes to adding to your yard or even buying a new piece of furniture. Please feel free to continue to bounce ideas off of me whenever you like!

We hired Jessie for the remodel of both our home, and our commercial building. We’ve decided that she’s a nonnegotiable part of every project that we will have going forward. Fabulous, no BS. She made our Sonoma Valley house feel 500 square feet larger by utilizing every inch intelligently. When we couldn’t afford a vaulted ceiling, she added design elements that gave that illusion instead. We sometimes get out the tape measure to show people that the ceilings are the same height as before. Her work is beautiful and functional. We love where we live, we’ll love where we work, both because of her.

This review is about Jessie Whitesides, one of the partners at Asquared studios. We are fire victims and we made a huge mistake choosing her services for our home rebuild. We signed a contract with her in early January 2018. The contract clearly stated: the budget, maximum price per square foot, the desired size for the house and the desired features. At the time of signing the contract Jessie Whitesides had no issues with the budget or the features of the house. 10 months and $30,000.00 later she calls a meeting with us and the builder. The builder informs us that the house she designed was 100% over our budget. The builder suggested that we start removing some features of the house in order to get us closer to the original budget. We sit with them for 3 hours to remove the features, and by the end of the 3 hour meeting there was nothing left from the house which Jessie Whitesides designed. We were back to Square One, drawing rectangles on paper to revise the schematic design plans. In her revised plans the garage somehow ends up being the largest room in the house, the house has only a fraction of the features from the signed contract, and the estimate from the builder still comes at $600,000.00 over budget. When we confront her she blames: the economy, Trump tariffs on China, shortage of labor, throws the builder under the bus, and…she blames us for not “absorbing” her “organic design process”. She follows up by sending an invoice for the painful 3 hour meeting. Needless to say, we fired her and we are starting from scratch a year later, which is devastating to us. We have already been through enough with losing our home, and she had ZERO accountability or remorse for wasting 10 months of our lives, $30,000.00 of our money and adding a tremendous amount of stress on our family. We recently found a new architect and reached out to the third-party firm to get a digital copy of our geo and septic reports. Turns out, the septic report that Jessie Whitesides requested was never fully completed! What an epic oversight for someone who blames her clients for not “absorbing” the architectural process. I would never recommend her to anyone not only because she couldn’t deliver on the contract, but also because she is not a good person. NotGoodSquared.

As a professional architecture studio we are saddened by your review. The circumstances of the fires were horrible for you as it was for so many others. It is unfortunate you feel your project has been improperly serviced because we take pride in the lengths we go to both keep our clients informed, and the extent to which we endeavor to educate on the architectural process, especially with those unfamiliar with the numerous and unique obstacles of a custom design project. At Asquared Studios we value a very high level of professional service and honesty in communication with our clients. We have the utmost respect for every client we work with, and find that most of work comes from repeat clients and direct referral. The relationships we form have enabled us to produce a very solid portfolio that quite frankly speaks for itself. The successes in our portfolio are a testament to our professional skills for aligning our clients dreams with their budgetary goals, the complexity of their site, managing the professional design team, obtaining jurisdiction approvals, and navigating the construction process. Having only been provided the opportunity to develop our relationship with you through the schematic design phase, the true potential of what we would have achieved together can not be recognized. Although not a formal part the typical process we always encourage going to preliminary bidding before a project reaches it’s final stages where more that 70% of the project fees have been charged. We did this with your project, which revealed we would need to reveal some value engineering strategies to align your goals with your budget. We are already hearing of home owners like yourself that were led to the end of the process and obtaining building permits only to find that their developed projects exceed their budgets because there were no preliminary pricing efforts. We stand by the process and our management of your project. Respectfully, we worked with you and the selected contractor to value engineer your project, and we found It unfortunate that, per your request, we were unable to continue working on your project to get the budget to a zone of comfort that could be more in line with your hopes. Typically when this happens, we continue working with the client to successfully help them realize a project that they ultimately love. At the onset of the visceral and emotional response to the process, we communicated with you about the architectural process and offered additional information from respected sources to help you understand (from others beyond Asquared Studios) why it is important to complete a schematic pricing exercise, and the role that value engineering plays in helping you achieve your goals. Following this review we have considered your comments about the septic report. To our knowledge the initial septic study performed by the licensed Civil Engineer proved that your system was in good working order. The final report is not required until the building permit documents are prepared and submitted to the Resiliency Permit Center, so we acted under the guidance of the Civil Engineer’s recommendations. The remaining pressure test on your system was performed in conjunction with your request to terminate our contract. At the time we provided our termination letter, we contacted all of the consultants involved in your project to inform them of our current status on your project. The Civil Engineer in charge of completing your septic study, informed me of the date they scheduled to perform this test. As I was no longer under contract with you, I asked the Civil Engineer to communicate his efforts directly with you.

As with any relationship, the quality of communication between the Client and the Architect is a key component in understanding each other. In our business, it also allows us to provide the best service possible. We are aware that there is a rare possibility our efforts, experience, and due diligence will not meet our clients desired intentions. In this case, we have seen this possibility come to fruition. It is evident that the documented and detailed communication we maintained throughout our project process has not led us to the same place in our search for a successful project solution. Consequent to the process, there are a myriad of real world factors that we as Architects simply can not control. We have spent a good deal of time sympathizing with you and your current situation, we respectfully terminated our contract with you per your request, and have graciously wished you the best in your efforts to achieve your project goals. We sincerely hope you find what you are looking for.

She combines creativity and a highly refined aesthetic with practicality and attention to detail, down to the very last nail and screw. She is available constantly to answer even the smallest questions. She listens carefully to the client and is sensitive to their desires and concerns. We took on our first home remodel with no prior experience or understanding of the complexity of the project we were undertaking. We also had strong ideas in regards to the specific design styles we wanted to influence our overall home look and feel. It was important to us to work with an architectural partner who could both mentor and guide us through the often overwhelming process, as well as, have the creative insight to translate divergent styles into a thoughtful, cohesive and unified expression. With Tony Garcia, we got all of that and more. His thoroughness, attention to detail, patience, and generous ability to educate us every step of the way made us feel informed and apart of the process. His refined style seamlessly and smartly combined the playfulness of modernists Charles and Ray Eames with a naturalist zen aesthetic. Most importantly, Tony worked with contractors, vendors and manufacturers to ensure that all project details were communicated with clarity and that the design integrity of the project was maintained across all moving parts. We're more than happy with the end result and consider Tony a friend we'd trust with any future design projects.

We decided to update our master bedroom and bath as things were getting a little tired looking. We live in a high rise condo unit so there were some challenges with regards to space and materials. Specifically, we wanted to remove the carpet in the master bedroom (which after our dogs were through with it was nearly toxic), expand our "master" closet (master is a joke due to the small size - it was hemmed in due to a building support structure), and redo our master bath (again, since this is a condo, size and space were an issue). Tony came over and we explained what we wanted: tile in the bedroom and bath, a bigger closet (if possible) that was actually functional, and a bathroom that used space more efficiently. Tony asked us about what we wanted in terms of look and feel and in a short time, he had a rough drawing of the new layout. He also had materials for us to look at to try and give us an idea of how it would all tie in together. Once we agreed with all of the material choices (which looked great), he set about finalizing the layout. Now, here, I need to say that because of a construction ambiguity (we didn't know if we would be able to move the location of our vanity without first doing the demo of our bathroom - damn condos!) we can to "pause" the finalization of the plans. Tony was very up front about the issue: basically, if we finalized the plan of moving the vanity but it turned out it would be impossible due to structural considerations, he would have to redo the plans and charge us for the rework. He gave us the option of allowing us to do the demo first and then finalize the plan once we knew if moving the vanity was possible. That's what we chose to do. On the plus side, this allowed us to save money. On the minus side, it meant that there was a delay as we needed Tony to finish the final plans before we could continue with the renovation. Still, in the end, it all worked out for the best and we appreciated that Tony was up front with us about costs so we could make an informed decision. As for the designs, it was all wonderful - modern and tasteful. Tony drew out EXACT plans for the remodel for the contractor to follow and worked with the contractor when issues came up (again, high rise condos - they are the worst! OK, I do really love our condo, but what a hassle!). Tony helped us secure the materials we needed (I am a bit of a control freak so I bought the materials according to Tony's specifications) so really we just needed the contractor to follow the play by play that Tony drew up. The materials Tony picked out are fantastic and everyone who has seen the floor and wall tiles, fixtures, and accents have been really impressed with how great everything looks. We are at the tail end of the remodel and can't wait to enjoy our new master suite.

Tony's guidance, program management, attention to detail and excellent working relationship with our design and building team was a critical success factor to our project.
