Studio Upwall Architects

We’ve worked with Studio Upwall on a wide range of projects. My spouse is a carpenter and I have a strong design sense, so on some of our projects, we needed our vision translated into permittable drawings. On others, we were stymied and looked to Greg and his team for original design ideas and problem solving around structural issues in our century-old DC rowhouse. In every case, we’ve found this to be a firm that listens to us about what we need and brings strong design and technical skills to the table. Although Greg’s aesthetic skews modern, and he does beautiful work in this style (as some of his other projects attest), he’s been equally able to work with our rustic/transitional space. He also has both the expertise and the team to address the tricky issues that come with retrofitting an old house to comply with contemporary building codes. Since we were doing the work on our house ourselves, it’s been incredibly valuable to be able to call for advice and trouble shooting help. Greg always visits our works in progress to see how his drawings are translating in the field, and helps us figure out the way forward. And he’s incredibly fun to work with, given his enthusiasm for our projects, his thoughtful efforts on our behalf, and his easy manner. We can’t recommend Studio Upwall highly enough!

We hired Greg to do a remodel of the house, however as he started designing the remodel he realized it would take more than a remodel to get the house we dreamed of (it was almost a tear down/rebuild). His vision was beautiful, he spent hours looking at things from different angles in order to have the right design. We always get compliments on how beautiful the house is from strangers walking by. Greg was incredible to work with, the design was his baby but he understood we were the clients and ultimately we had the final decisions. If the opportunity arises we will work with him again. We would not hesitate to recommend him.

Mr Upwall is a talented, dedicated and flexible designer architect, and both my wife and I feel very comfortable recommending him to anyone looking for a hassle free and spectacular building process. We are currently building an addition under his guidance, and have been amazed at the attention to detail and workflow Mr Upwall exhibits.

Greg had an extremely personable way of discussing my project. We went through many iterations of my small DC row house gut renovation until we were both satisfied with the layout. He was committed to getting the layout that I wanted and of course that made sense. Greg and his Studio Upwall team did great work us in helping us to plan our rowhouse remodel. We have an old DC rowhouse who floor plan wanted updating, and Greg helped us to plan a thoughtful remodeling plan that fits our needs. The team presented several good options, from the conventional to the creative, helping us decide what was possible and what was practical. Once we settled on a plan, they guided us through timeframe and permitting. They were efficient, responsive, and great to work with.

Greg and team designed an office for me in an area in the back yard of our house in Marin. The project was managed by Greg and his efforts and thoughtfulness was outstanding. The office was designed with efficiency, comfort and the view of Mt. Tam as top of mind. Greg is an outstanding architect and a wonderful person to work with.
