roof style for extension

we are building a pavillion style extension which will attach to our house via a glass walkway and make our house L shaped. As it will be oriented to face North I wanted a skillion roof with clerestory windows to maximize solar passive aspects. However we also want to have photovoltaics and therefore I thought the roof style in my picture was best option. However my ever cost conscious husband thinks this will require an enormously expensive steel beam and that we would be better with a straight hip roof. This is also because the extension isn't a straight rectangle but has a jutting out section where our dining will go.
I'm willing to compromise but not before investigating whether the cost really is that prohibitive and if there is a way to get skillion roof + access for Solar panels for reasonable amount.

Can you post a plan too so we can understand how this fits in? The section implies a beam will be required but as everything costs it may be a great investment. How much are you looking to spend on the project?

Looks expensive. Talk to your builder and then add 50%. We went for a roof system from Ritek which allowed large spans, and a similar thin profile you have drawn. Expensive but good result in the end. Our house has three different pavilions, two under the main lower roof.

Probablement la position de l'extension est contrainte par le plan interieur, donc difficile de la placer autrement. C'est toujours le même défit de mélanger le vieux et le neuf. Comment faire pour que le vieux s'intègre au neuf et ne se démode pas dans la durée. Pas facile, surtout quand nos choix d'extension ou de construction sont tellement influencés par la mode. Les maisons de cet architecte sont plutôt très réussies quand on regarde son dossier. Le mode de construction impose aussi, je pense, le style. Et ce style carré, aigu, convenait moins à cette chaumière très romantique.

J'ai oublié de dire que les sols/dalles ne sont pas faites, le niveau "maison" peut être plus petit, ne pas aller jusqu'à la limite du terrain. On ne voudrait pas non plus entrer directement sur les marches.

Aïe ! Sur la longueur de 216, même s'il faut préserver 20 ou 30 cm pour les interrupteurs, vous avez largement la place de caser un frigo et même un rangement complémentaires tout en laissant assez d'ouvertures pour le lave vaisselle dans le prolongement de l'évier. Par contre, la cuisine ancienne avec ses 57 cm de profondeur n'est plus au normes actuelles où les plans de travail font entre 62 et 65 cm. Ca ne veut pas dire que ce n'est pas jouable. Ca veut dire qu'il va falloir jouer très serré dans le choix d'un lave vaisselle "gain de place" Certain encastrables ou intégrables en 45 cm de large (8 couverts) ne font que 55 cm de profondeur. Attention aussi à la hauteur. Ce pourrait être jouable, même en conservant la porte basse du meuble frigo actuel. Mais mesurez tout bien avant tout achat.

I suspect your eave is too narrow on the North over the clerestory window. There is a calculation for this.

10 metres + is a considerable single span for timber or steel!

Could be engineered but you can reduce costs quite easily by adding a post somewhere to reduce the single span. End of island bench perhaps?

What about exposed clerestory trusses and make them a feature such as recycled trusses out of an old building.

So we should probably go gable (not hip)?

We are looking at having a two-way fireplace to divide the living area so there could be structural support incorporated into this.

Ok so I am thinking we could still have a skillion roof with raked trusses with eaves which would overhang and then a flat roof over the jutting out dining area which extends alongs the length as a veranda.

Seems you've done the research! Raked Truss systems would get the look your after without huge extra expense. Allow lots of room between the lower and upper roof to get a decent (500mm high min) clerestory window - otherwise it will all be for nothing

I just keep bugging my very practical husband with "why can't we do X?" This is why the extension is taking so long to progress.

But I'm wearing him down gradually - he's agreed to the two sided fireplace.

We're in Canberra so good Northern light will be important.

Clerestory windows leak a lot of heat, due to their location up near the ceiling. So you'd have to determine whether the heat gained through these windows (due to passive solar heating) is greater than the heat lost. In any case, you'd probably want good quality double glazing for these windows. You'd also have very high ceilings, which increases heating costs.

North facing windows are good for admitting sunlight, particularly if you have south facing living areas. In your case, I'm not so sure (as I'm not an expert).

As said above high ceilings and windows can have issues such as those raised. If this is the only way to get north light in to a living area then you can mitigate some of the heat loss issues using fans which push the hot air back down, or mechanical reticulation systems. High levels windows are great for passive cooling, but unless the warmth of the sunlight can be absorbed by some thermal mass then your not likely to get a huge heating benefit.

Alternative design layout which get north light into living areas in a more conventional manner would be more practical and cost effective if you can achieve that.

thanks Northerndesignstudio. we weren't thinking of having the slope very high, only having the ceiling a bit over 3 metres at peak (and starting at 2400 at lowest point).

We used high level Windows on the northern side, and heaps of glass at the back (east), as we have a very high house to our north.

Paul makes a great point about clerestory windows being effective for passive cooling. As Canberra has a high diurnal temperature variation (hot days with cool nights in summer) you'll get a lot of summer cooling with these windows. As mentioned, just make sure you have some internal thermal mass to absorb the direct sunlight from these windows in winter. This mass will also stabilize the temperature in summer.

thanks for all the useful comments. agree we don't want massive heat loss into ceiling and out high windows in winter
