Recommend a painting/picture for my wall?
Hi all,
We are thinking of placing a painting on the dark wall in our living room but are stuck with what kind of painting to put and what size.
Our theme is midcentury modern. Arc lamp can be moved out of the way so that it doesn't obstruct the painting. Would a colourful abstract painting work? Or maybe a black and white photograph, enlarged....or?
Any ideas most welcome. Thanks

Colours - which colour and where!?
Commentaires (0)This is the wall of my living room leading up to the stairs. We would like to paint a wall - hubby thinks wall with painting and chimney which protrudes from the wall. I'm inclined to think the back wall on either side of the chimney (more work). What do you think - we do have high ceilings... Now the second problem is the staircase...we will varnish the stairs the same colour as the parquet BUT...the banisters and upright were painted white at some point partially sanded and now look strange. I want to paint them because there is a lot of crevices and I think it will be too much work to sand it all done. We are leaning towards a darker colour - in the picture it looks black but in fact it's a a dark shade of blue. I was also thinking of F&Bs "Black Blue". Commentaires (7)Hello, F&B Black Blue is gorgeous for the staircase and I personnally would'paint the whole wall (including above the chimney) in a nice F&b yellow'colour, such as Yellow ground or Dayroom Yellow. I'm sure this combination of colours'will just be stunning. However I would recommend that you test the colours before choosing one (on reasonnably big surface,i.e. 1sq. meter) because once applied on a surface the colour might look very different than what we expected. F&B sells samples for 8€ and I really think this is worth it. I' telling'you this because I experimented it in my house. I was convinced one colour was THE one and still tested another one aswell by precaution and, once applied on the wall, the second one was an evidence. Good luck and pls keep us up to date. do you have any of your own photos you might like on the walls? I say walls because it seems to me the space above the television could also benefit from something like a trio of small images/artwork or similar to balance off a larger artwork or image on the right wall. I've included a sample below and while budget might play a part in the solution I think both walls need something and they wouldn't have to be framed in the traditional manner.
A few of David Hockney's works from the 70s or thereabouts (Palm Springs etc) also come to mind but you have to like the work so it comes back to your own personal preferences.
When you have a large tv, as most of us seem to these days, they can dominate the wall behind them but still leave a difficult void above. A few small images or some kind of long artefact or sculptural piece would make an interesting choice for the tv wall - something with a dash of colour that works with or compliments the larger work on the other wall.
Obviously if you want more impact jump away from this almost sombre group into something more vibrant, and that may point to something of a graphic nature, rather than traditional art or photographic choices. Enjoy this little journey - you have obviously put a lot of time into the whole house project so far, so take a little time to solve this one, Danny

il y a 7 ansHi Lee, I agree with phillipawright that the space would benefit with some textures in the room. If you were wanting to maintain the dramatic effect of the darker wall colour, another alternative to the black and white photograph is a large scaled ink painting. It has a soft and dramatic feel to it also. The benefit is that you can then choose the frame to suit your feel, be it white, black or wood

il y a 7 ansThanks for the comments and suggestions everyone, they are all very helpful and we are still working on what to put on the wall.
We have currently placed a Giant Birds of Paradise plant (Strelitzia Nicolai) in the corner and it has added some life to it. One of the options we are considering is enlarging one of the photographs which I took on a recent trip, framing it and placing it on the wall. Still a work in progress :)
