Adding final 'wow' touches to Living Room

We're a bit stuck with the final touches on our Living Room! We're wondering what to do round the fireplace, on the chimney breast and either side of it. Also what curtains/blinds do we put along the back? We're considering whether to paint those white beams a darker colour and then put something darker above the fireplace but not sure. It's an extension on a 1930s house so don't want it to be too modern but want to make the most of the vaulted ceiling.

What a lovely room. Shelving would give you the chance to personalise the space with books, photos and momentos. You could also opt for plants, paintings or mirrors. You can dress both alcoves the same or make the different (my preference!)

Beautiful room, it just needs those finishing touches. The walls look pretty bare. You could put a lovely mirror over the fireplace, add more art especially in the alcoves. Simple linen or linen mix curtains would look lovely on the tall windows to create cosiness. The first pictures looks great with the sofa, cushions, side table and blinds so carry through to other walls. Some plants would also be a good idea. Sometimes a little black or chocolate brown will add a bit of drama too such as with lamps or coffee/side tables.

Le placard de la salle de bain est une très bonne idée, cela vous fait du rangement mais aussi permet de cacher d'autres éléments comme le linge salle, j'avoue j'aime bien tout caché afin de laisser l'espace vide et un volume simple. Comme je le dis toujours, mon œil se fatigue vite alors moins il y a de choses différentes et mieux je me porte ;) Ne vous inquiétez pas, j'aime courir et ça me fait de la lecture et c'est surtout vous qui courez dans tous les sens, car je lis les autres groupes de questions que vous avez ouvert et je trouve ça bien que vous ayez plusieurs personnes différentes pour chaque espace de votre appartement et franchement ça va rendre et je pense que l'on a tous hâte de voir le résultat (addition) final, même si vous êtes au canada. J'ai compris pour les tuyaux, c'est très clair et il va falloir que l'on trouve quelque chose pour lui donner de la valeur malgré tout et je suis sur que l'on peut en faire un vrai éléments structurant. J'avais pensé à une bibliothèque qui peut être d'un côté un buffet salle à manger et une bibliothèque côté salon ... je dois encore réfléchir et je donnerais mon avis sur le bon forum.

J'ai commandé le tapis qui doit arriver la semaine prochaine et j'ai acheté ce papier peint pour recouvrir le fond de mes étagères : Je vais le poser demain et je prendrai des photos. Pour les coussins j'attends de recevoir le tapis car les couleurs seront peut être différentes de la photo :)

Bonjour Diagonales Décor. Plutôt scandinave mais pas sur que ça aille avec nos choix. Pour avoir une idée : Murs : tous blanc. Celui qui fait la séparation avec la partie nuit on aimerait le faire en parement briques blanches. Qu'en pensez-vous? on voulait rouge mais on s'est dit que ce sera trop. Sol : parquet PVC Quickstep de cette couleur : Les briques ne sont pas une obligation, si vous avez d'autres idées semblables ou même complètement différentes on est ouvert!! Bonne journée :)

Bonjour Scarlette, la mise en oeuvre sur un plan de travail est plus ou moins identique à celle aux sols et aux murs. Les revêtements en Ecomalta s'appliquent à la spatule et il faut compter entre 5 à 7 passes avec les vernis de finition, soit une passe du promoteur d'adhésion, une à trois passes de ecomalta colorée et les vernis. Le produit nécessite d'être poncé entre chaque passe et pour cette raison il nécessite des applicateurs professionnels bien équipés. Diversement nous avons des solutions "ready to use" à usage non professionnels disponibles en 10 couleurs.

Fantastic room! First thing I would do is pull the seating together, so you can actually (almost) reach the coffee table. It will make the room seem even larger (wow), yet it will feel cosier. Do you have two 3-seaters and 2 loveseats? Or?

I would try to find two sideboards that will fit in the alcoves and hang a large piece of art above each one. Something like in Sonia's first photo.

I think that modern (semi) sheer curtains, wave style in a soft white colour, along that patio door wall will look soft and luxurious. Make the track wide enough so the curtains will hang in front of the wall when open.

A 30s style mirror on the fireplace?

lovely Room. I agree with Carolina and would bring the sofas forward. Could you use the 4th one elsewhere as I’d centre the sofa between the windows, one opposite that and one opposite the fire? If in budget, I’d add a surround on the fire, maybe a rug to zone the seating too. I also agree re Kentia Palms 😊 Is there a coordinating plain fabric to the blinds as I might use that?

will there be a tv in the room and how wide are the alcoves? Matching consoles would look lovely (use matching lamps but different accessories so it’s not completely symmetrical ) or a drinks cabinet and sideboard. John Lewis used to do one which would work well but no longer sold it seems so have just added these for now!

Hello, A lovely room. Although the lights are on, its looks dark, maybe how photograph is taken ? or my laptop, time of day ??? But it looks all the same tone, very neutral and formal. So add a pop of colour pastels or brights with some accessories, curtains, blinds, (if you like your blinds you already have you can get another blind on top of that one, or had some sheer curtains to soften, a cushion and find some pictures that have the same or some of the same colour to it. The curtains can be sheer if not overlooked. And plants, lots of plants to make it cosy and alive. Group some plants together next to the window. A vase of flowers from the garden. Shelving with books, keepsakes like in the pictures everyone else has suggested. I agree move the sofas closer. Not sure why you have 4 sofas but maybe put one facing the fireplace and another back to back with it giving the idea of a love seat. The other 2 closer like a U shape. Or if you have a lovely garden, why face away from it and make the loveseat facing that direction. So the sofa back to back facing the garden still keeping the U-shape. And the sofa facing the fireplace put a consul table behind it with accessories. A place to put a book, kindle, or cup of tea if you are lounging. You have not shown the forth wall. I presume a door and blank wall. A consul table with family or any pictures or it ? Alcove shelving and a chimney breast mantle / shelf with a mirror, vase of flowers or pictures. If you are not sure of colours. Get some wall paper samples (grab large pieces) of the colours you like and the ones you think are too bright or different from your tastes. Colours do change depending on the type of light you have and combination of natural light. Wrap around one of your cushions see what it looks like throughout the day. Put the same colour next to the window and on the wall, what does it feel like ? If wow go for it, if not choose another or combination. Or get an assortment of cushions, leave it/them in place for a day as the light changes (you can always take them back) Or if you have a fav jumper, scarf, dress etc with colour you like take it with you and match it up. Get some colour swatches and place them around the room see what they look like. With regards to statement pictures. Find you local art group, photography group, where you will find original pieces. For any home one statement piece will lasts forever, (unless you are a person that redecorates very 5 years). Or make your own... There are lots of photo prints sight that will print up a favourite holiday picture(s). You can ask an artist, photographer (after lockdown is lifted) to bring a selection of pieces and you can see what it is like in situ on different walls.

Most of all experiment and have fun, you have time to make it feel right.

A P.S. Do not paint the white beams a darker colour, you will feel that the room is cut in half. But if you feel brave, you could hang plants from them. And about covering the radiators, there are lots of radiator covers, in my day there was close to none, now you have a huge choice. unless you are going to put something in front of them.

Thanks all, some excellent ideas and great advice about a big picture above the mantlepiece. Love the sideboard ideas and thanks for the link @Carolina. For the bi-folds, I had thought about Allusion Blinds as they're quite contemporary but not sure?

Had to google those :-) They look quite contemporary, but they remind me a bit of the 80s office look vertical blinds (sorry, it's a very personal thing ;-) ). Also, I've only seen them on a ceiling track, inside the window recess. I don't know whether there's a wall mounted track for them? If not, they'll have to hang inside the recess, which means they'll be in front of the windows even when open. And since you have wall either side, you can use that to stack curtains, which will look more luxurious, I think. Makes the window seem wider and it won't block any light.

But I haven't seen Allusion Blinds in real life, so I might be entirely wrong about them. The YouTube videos aren't convincing me. Again, it's a personal thing. Vertical blinds make me shudder.

Agree with most of the suggestions above, your symmetry is the issue for me, I find it hard looking at sofas that are not centred or at angles, the one thing that I feel would help is a huge rug, one of those worn out old style ones right in the middle, it’s quite a big room and the plain carpet expanse is very dominant and makes things look small

art and plants are always a winner for me

LOVE that wall and ceiling above the fireplace, what an amazing space. I think a nice big piece of art above there with lots of texture would be great and also some softness from floor length curtains - sheer/flowing material as I feel the room just needs a bit of texture and curves to compliment it.

This is a gorgeous space! Styling makes all the difference when it comes to finishing off a room. Have you thought about adding artwork or a mirror above the fire place and maybe a shelve to display vases, ornaments etc. I agree with many of the others, greenery makes all the difference.

Try adding a rug to bring the seating area together.

We would recommend adding a wall mural on the chimney breast, or either side of it. This would make a wonderful statement in this beautiful room!
