Hi Houzzers, I am getting dangerously addicted to this site! My husband and I just bought a 1971 colonial and it needs a LOT of work (but we don't have a LOT of money!). I just started blogging about it at www.myinspirationalhome.com and I really could use your professional advice!
We do have a decorator but mainly for color consultations, we can't afford much more than that. So pleeeease check out my blog and leave comments with your great ideas!
We are not creative types and we can use all the help we can get. Our goal is a clean, modern (but not too modern) house with room and storage for our expanding family and all our stuff. We're depending on you and looking forward to hearing what you have to say! Thank you!

Do you want to be consulted on the nitty-gritty, day-to-day details, or are you more interested in big picture issues? Similarly, at what level do you want to be involved in the product research? Are you looking for comprehensive, "soup to nuts" guidance, or do you consider yourself design-savvy and only in need of assistance with color, space planning and resources? Are you a visual person or a tactile person? Will you be satisfied with a designer showing you photos of products, or do you prefer to see and feel everything before deciding whether it is right for you? Do you prefer to be shown many options or fewer? Are you open to the input of others? Are you able to make choices with confidence, or do you tend to vacillate? What are your expectations in terms of a timeline Determine the Scope of Your Project The scope of a project to some extent dictates the qualifications and experience required of the interior designer you are hiring. If you are building a new home or addition, or undertaking a major renovation to existing space, you are likely already working with an architect. This is good. Architects and designers often work in concert, balancing the aesthetics of the home's structure, or "bones," with the interior furnishings and finishes. You may want to get your architect involved in the selection of the interior designer—whether it's recommending someone he or she has already worked with, or using one of the interior designers the firm may have on staff. If you're redecorating a single room or have a limited budget for a space that does not require structural change, you may not need an interior designer at all. You may be happy hiring a specialist, such as a color consultant, who can work with your existing furnishings and help you revamp the space with new paint color and fabric selections.... COLOR AND SHADES We want to turn your attention to shades. If you want to eat less, repaint the dining room in your favorite color but in its cold shade. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold shades of any colors will oppress the appetite, warm and dark shades, on the contrary, will awaken it. White is the most versatile and comfortable color, for good reason it has become the main color of Scandinavian design. HOME PLANTS Potted plants not only give comfort and more air to our homes. The presence of a large number of home plants in the interior of the kitchen also encourages us to eat and cook green food, and this is mainly greens, vegetables and fruits, olive oil. If you don’t like plants — wallpapers with all sorts of palm and tropical prints will come to help you. When you are in a messy out-of-control place, it gives you an excuse to pay less attention to your eating habits. il y a 10 ansSophie be carefull of painting your front door black because if the front of the house gets a lot of sunlight, the black paint will blister a lot faster than a lighter colour. As a general rule, the lighter the colour, the longer the paint will last. This applies to all exterior painting. That said, black can look awesome!

il y a 10 ansAny ideas for light fixtures for this room? We're thinking a long horizontal fixture across the center beam or one large pendant with two smaller ones. The room will be a living room/dining room and the table will not be centered under the fixture. We are putting spotlights on both sides of the sloped ceiling but want a nice focal fixture in the middle.
It's a little hard to tell but the room will be big and open. We are filling in the sunken portion.
