How do you improve on midcentury modern? Lincoln Lighthill Architect’s extensive renovation of an early 60's, Eichler-esque home on Twin Peaks answers the question by picking up where the original house left off, with simple but important updates that reimagine this unique home. By replacing punched windows with walls of glass, removing interior walls and opening up a 40’ wide living space with a large steel moment frame, inserting skylights at key locations to bring light deep into the interior, and cantilevering a steel and timber deck off the front to take in the spectacular view, the full potential of the original design is realized. The renovation included an inside and out rethinking of how the home functions, with new kitchen, bathrooms, and finishes throughout. A comprehensive energy upgrade included efficient windows, LED lighting and dimming controls, spray-foam insulation throughout, efficient furnace upgrades, and pre-wiring for a rooftop solar system.

Un balcon bien aménagé peut être une véritable oasis dans une maison ou un appartement. Vous disposez d’un petit espace extérieur et ne savez pas comment l’optimiser ? Vous rêvez d’un balcon fleuri, mais craignez de le surcharger ? Ou alors, vous voulez en construire un ? Construire un balcon : conseils

Comme pour tous travaux importants, la construction d’un balcon requiert de passer par des étapes précises, et une réglementation est à étudier soigneusement avant de se lancer dans un tel projet. Ceci dit, un permis de construire n’est pas toujours exigé, sauf s’il est prévu que la surface de ce nouvel espace dépasse les 20 mètres carrés. Dans le cas où cet ajout nécessiterait d’altérer la structure de votre intérieur (par exemple, en agrandissant l’accès), vous aurez besoin d’un permis de construire. Un artisan qualifié saura identifier les enjeux que présente votre projet et aura des connaissances approfondies sur les normes en vigueur, ainsi que les critères à appréhender afin d’assurer une sécurité optimale. Vous hésitez à faire bâtir un balcon en bois, en fer forgé ou en béton ? Un professionnel saura quels matériaux seront les plus adaptés selon votre projet.

Comment décorer un balcon ?

Un balcon décoré et aménagé avec soin fera office d’espace détente, et vous permettra d’en profiter au maximum pendant les beaux jours. Glissez-y un petit salon de jardin, où vous pourrez déjeuner, lire ou encore recevoir vos proches. Pour un balcon étroit, choisissez des chaises pliables ou un mange-debout. Ne négligez pas l’éclairage et ajoutez une guirlande lumineuse pour donner du cachet à cet espace. Côté verdure, pensez aux plantes suspendues ou aux balconnières. Vous pouvez aussi opter pour des étagères hautes pour y poser vos plantes. Un potager suspendu vous permettra également de gagner de la place si besoin. Pour un balcon moderne, ajoutez un miroir ou un treillis à l’un de vos murs!

Comment aménager son balcon pour le cacher des regards ?

Surtout si vous êtes en ville, il est très possible que vous ayez un vis-à-vis. Pour vous protéger du regard des voisins, un brise-vue pour balcon est une bonne alternative. Choisi en éventail, il peut être replié quand vous ne ressentez pas le besoin de l’utiliser. Des plantes et des fleurs peuvent aussi faire l’affaire, ou encore des rideaux ou des voilages, qui non seulement préservent votre intimité mais donnent un peu d’ombre sans toutefois créer un effet de balcon fermé.
