DDLA Design Landscape ArchitectureLocated in the Lake County area north of Kelowna, this property provides stunning views of the Okanagan Lake. The front entry required the creation of a series of terraces with lush gardens, lawn areas, an arbor, glide swing, grass paths and decorative landscape lighting. A new, new decorative entry gate was designed to welcome the visitors and compliment the architecture of the residence. A steep slope from the main road to the garage required a new heated driveway finished with decorative paving bands and borders.

The outcome was a balance of sun and shady seating areas, lawn play space, and multi-seasonal plant beds that soften and screen parts of the driveway, garage, and neighboring property.
Art & Architecture IncNative Coneflower and Monarda have grown & spread to fill this front yard planting bed. Over 14 years, this bed has expanded to replace a large area of Bermuda grass that I hand dug to remove this difficult creeping grass. Plant density is key to weed control, as there is just little space for them to get started. Less maintenance than lawn, no watering needed, no chemicals, plus I leave the plants to over winter leaving the seed heads for the birds to enjoy. Just break down the plant stems late February to make a light mulch.

We began this project with the idea of making a friendly entryway and social area under the Mulberry tree which provides much needed shade in this hot, mountainous area. The 'red fescue' meadow grass has a cooling effect and the agaves reduce the need for excess water and maintenance.
The backyard has a covered dining area with a corner lounge and fireplace. The large barbecue offers a cantilevered counter for entertaining. The waterfall into the pool is surrounded with bamboo and plantings that emulate the hillside beyond the property. The permeable paving and mix of Vitex and Olive trees provide shade for smaller seating areas to enjoy the variety of succulents throughout the garden

UserThe soil in this part of the garden had been invaded by the aggressive pest Equisetum hyemale (horsetail or scouring rush). Apparently small pieces of the plant were contained in the soil that was brought in to create better drainage for our raised beds. this was our solution to the problem. photo by Caitlin Atkinson
Art & Architecture IncYear one identified that even with a 12 feet wide paved drive, visitors would often drive right over the plants. Rather than add more expensive and unattractive curbs that can damage tire side walls, granite boulders were added to notify poor drivers that they are off the pavement, and thus protect the plants.
