The Crafted GardenThis cottage garden and perennial border needed to survive in an area with a heavy deer population. The client preferred a minimal electric fencing to a total enclosure so as to admire the successive blooms from her kitchen window. The hillside was terraced with low retaining walls of local stone and antique urns held seasonal accent plants. Most of the plants were deer resistant.

The personal sanctuary of Landscape Designer Eileen Kelly, owner of Dig Your Garden Landscape Design. This sustainable garden also serves as Eileen's "living laboratory" where she observes and learns from the habits and growth of her extensive selection of plants. They include hundreds of varieties of low-water plants that range from California natives to plants from other Mediterranean regions such as South Africa and Australia, and a few exotics from Hawaii and other regions. Succulents have always been one of Eileen's favorites for their dramatic textures and low-water needs, and they co-mingle beautifully throughout the landscape. The stairways, pathways and patio areas throughout the landscape offer places to pause or linger to take in the natural surroundings and views both up close and in the distance. This diverse garden also offers an abundance of biodiversity and balance for the birds, the bees and the butterflies. Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignA medley of colorful succulents, and low-water grasses and flowering plants surround the fountain providing colors and textures throughout the seasons . The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs and trees provided more outdoor space for dining and entertaining, less maintenance. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn, a lower water bill for the homewoners. The low-water plants include a variety of succulents such as Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' with chartreuse green foliage, Echeveria 'Lipstick', and other succulents along with Lomandra 'seascape' (a grass-like plant), Echinacea, and Salvia.
