This stylish above ground family plunge pool is the highlight of this beautiful Balinese-styled backyard.
Fully lined with deep-blue glass mosaic tiles and incorporating a wet-edge spill-over wall, the overall look and finish is a wonderful balance of clean lines and complimentary aesthetics.
A play ledge for the kids runs the length of the pool, and the ascending steps are finished in Travertine tiles. Unobtrusive glass fencing and Asian-inspired garden plants enhance the visual appeal. This wonderful family plunge pool is very low maintenance, incorporating the convenience of a jet back pool cleaner, as well as the comfort of gas heating for year-round enjoyment.
Mini excavators were used to ensure minimal disruption to this small and difficult-to-access site. Construction was also challenging, with a lot of rain during excavation. However, the result has thrilled this family and transformed the backyard into a focal point of relaxation and enjoyment.

ShubinDonaldsonThe client, a restaurateur and former professional baseball player for the Japanese leagues whose love for Japanese culture and cuisine manifested itself into his San Francisco Japanese restaurant and his Asian-influenced home.
The client desired a house that would maximize the amount of livable space while maintaining a usable backyard and pool, all with hints of an Eastern aesthetic. The client did not want the home to loom as a monolith above the surrounding neighborhood.
To establish an unobtrusive streetscape presence, Shubin + Donaldson took advantage of the downward sloping nature of the land. From the street, the residence appears to be a two-story structure, but the rear view reveals a spacious three-story, terraced home with full-length glass windows and doors that look onto the pool.
To impart a Japanese elegance, fine craftsmanship, reminiscent of seamless, fitted Japanese woodworking and various combinations of Asian-origin hardwoods are used throughout this ground-up construction. Rows of stained-teak planks with steel create railings, shades, gates, and fences on the exterior and interior of the house. Planks are meticulously joined at corners, appearing nearly seamless. Asian hardwoods also compose the stairs, ceilings, and floors of various interior locales. At the staircase, a shoji screen back window curves into a skylight, blurring the lines between wall and ceiling.

Donohoe Living LandscapesThe landscape design for this private residence brings together a diverse array of elements to create an ethereal, multi-sensory experience where sound, movement, colour and scent are simultaneously evoked. Shielded by a forty foot hedge, the site challenged us to create an exterior, yet interior, world where Asian and Western influences intersect. In honouring the traditions of Feng Shui, the retaining wall does not sit directly on the entrance. Meditation pathways lead to areas of retreat and socialization (including an outdoor fire, a restored pool and covered seating area). An ergonomic garden and potting station lined with fruit trees allows the client to grow her own plants and vegetables. A multi-leveled water feature is framed with lush camellias and peonies; the landscape is lined with evergreens and decorated with Chinese basalt and local granite. The multi-sensory design comes to life in the grove of Shirofugen cherry trees as it sheds its petals to the music of a custom Corten steel wind chime sculpture made by English artist David Harber. A weather station was placed on site for a month to determine the weight of the chimes—each one set to the pentatonic scale. This is a space where our clients can grow and evolve their lives with the seasons.
