A succession of everyday spaces occupied the lower floor of this restored 18th century castle on the hillside.
The existing estate illustrating a period clouded by historic neglect.
The restoration plan for this castle house focused on increasing its spatial value, its open space architecture and re-positioning of its windows. The garden made it possible to enhance the depth of the view over the rooftops and the Baixa river. An existing addition was rebuilt to house to conduct more private and entertainment functions.
The unexpected discovery of an old and buried wellhead and cistern in the center of the house was a pleasant surprise to the architect and owners.

This client came to us with a desire to have a multi-function semi-outdoor area where they could dine, entertain, and be together as a family. We helped them design this custom Three Season Room where they can do all three--and more! With heaters and fans installed for comfort, this family can now play games with the kids or have the crew over to watch the ball game most of the year 'round!

Published in the NORTHSHORE HOME MAGAZINE Fall 2015 issue, this home was dubbed 'Manchester Marvel'.
Before its renovation, the home consisted of a street front cottage built in the 1820’s, with a wing added onto the back at a later point. The home owners required a family friendly space to accommodate a large extended family, but they also wished to retain the original character of the home.
The design solution was to turn the rectangular footprint into an L shape. The kitchen and the formal entertaining rooms run along the vertical wing of the home. Within the central hub of the home is a large family room that opens to the kitchen and the back of the patio. Located in the horizontal plane are the solarium, mudroom and garage.
Client Quote
"He (John Olson of OLSON LEWIS + Architects) did an amazing job. He asked us about our goals and actually walked through our former house with us to see what we did and did not like about it. He also worked really hard to give us the same level of detail we had in our last home."

This 1920's Georgian-style home in Hillsborough was stripped down to the frame and remodeled. It features beautiful cabinetry and millwork throughout. A marriage of antiques, art and custom furniture pieces were selected to create a harmonious home.
Bi-fold Nana doors allow for an open space floor plan. Coffered ceilings to match the traditional style of the main house. Galbraith & Paul, hand blocked print fabrics. Limestone flooring.

Remodeled screen porch to create a sunroom.
This bold, collected and colorful sunroom was designed with the intention of capturing as much lighting as we could, the windows replaced the screens that were originally in place. The columns were antique columns that created a unique transition from the kitchen & dining room to the sunroom.
The teak bench is from Indonesia, the berber rug is Moroccan, the tiki ottoman and french bistro table alongside the antique, wooden, pig trough coffee table with wood straps were the perfect eclectic mix to give the feel of an exotic space within the home.
Our tie in touch was the ceiling color which reflected the outdoor swimming pool through it's cool blue color, a final touch that brought the indoor-outdoor concept to life.

ORIJIN STONE, LLC
The main design goal of this Northern European country style home was to use traditional, authentic materials that would have been used ages ago. ORIJIN STONE premium stone was selected as one such material, taking the main stage throughout key living areas including the custom hand carved Alder™ Limestone fireplace in the living room, as well as the master bedroom Alder fireplace surround, the Greydon™ Sandstone cobbles used for flooring in the den, porch and dining room as well as the front walk, and for the Greydon Sandstone paving & treads forming the front entrance steps and landing, throughout the garden walkways and patios and surrounding the beautiful pool. This home was designed and built to withstand both trends and time, a true & charming heirloom estate.

Sunspace Design, Inc.
This downtown Shrewsbury, MA project was a collaborative effort between our talented design team and the discerning eye of the homeowner. Our goal was to carefully plan and construct an orangery-style addition in a very difficult location without significantly altering the architectural flow of the existing colonial home.
The traditional style of an English orangery is characterized by large windows built into the construction as well as a hip style skylight centered within the space (adding a masterful touch of class). In keeping with this theme, we were able to incorporate Anderson architectural French doors and a spectacular skylight so as to allow an optimum amount of light into the structure.
Engineered and constructed using solid dimensional lumber and insulated in compliance with (and exceeding) international residential building code requirements, this bespoke orangery blends the beauty of old world design with the substantial benefits of contemporary construction practices.
Bringing together the very best characteristics of a Sunspace Design project, the orangery featured here provides the warmth of a traditional English AGA stove, the rustic feel of a bluestone floor, and the elegance of custom exterior and interior decorative finishes. We invite you to add a modern English orangery to your own home so that you can enjoy a lovely dining space with your family, or simply an extra area to sit back and relax within.
