This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. Adjacent, a 1200 sf building is reconfigured for a guest or visiting artist residence and studio with a shared outdoor patio for entertaining. Photo by Peter Molick, Art by Karin Broker

Micro-Structures
This is a studio shed for a local Portland designer. It features three distinct areas in a relatively small space – a work area, a study area for desk and shelves, and a toolshed.
The patio doors open into the work area.
The study area, with built-in desk and shelves, is in the front area. The study area has high windows for sunlight and different exterior siding.
The toolshed is a completely separate space, with its own doors, on the side of the building.

Inside Out Oxford Bespoke Garden Rooms
SEMI-DETACHED ARTISTS' STUDIOS
Lois and Miranda are artists who live next door to each other in west Oxford terrace properties with adjoining rear gardens. The dream for both of them was to build a studio in the garden, so one day, as a building project in one of their homes was drawing to a close, Lois and Miranda asked the departing builder to lay a concrete slab on their shared boundary, straddling each side of the boundary line equally, and to connect each side of the slab with armoured electrical supply cable to their respective houses.
Fast forward to the present, and Lois and Miranda asked us to design a semi-detached studio building with the same footprint as the concrete slab. The studios needed to be higher than permitted development regulations for outbuildings allow, which meant applying for planning permission from Oxford City Council. [Obtaining planning permission is part of the service with Inside Out Oxford...]
The brief was to concoct something quirky, with lots of light, using vintage windows or replica, stained black with dark grey trim, finished inside throughout in ply and sterling board, and connected through the party wall with a party hatch. We sourced and restored an original Victorian sash window from 1895 for Miranda's studio, and built a modern double-glazed copy of that for Lois's studio.
This was an amazing project for us. Lois and Miranda are delighted with the result and are now living the dream as artists in residence!

This image is a close up of the reglet detail at the window. The detail gives the space a very modern feel with clean lines. No wood trim is necessary with detail other than the fir window liner as used in the image.
