Sitescapes Landscape Architecture & Planning
Taking influence from early Santa Barbara, this community was designed to be a Spanish-style enclave.
The Site Plan is oriented around a center street/paseo named after State Street in Santa Barbara. This main spine is lushly landscaped with unique specimens and has strong pedestrian elements, including benches and vine-covered arbors throughout. At the terminus of both ends of State Street lie two parks designed to resemble the essence of their namesakes in Santa Barbara.
Alice Keck Park is a whimsical, playful area with a serpentine seatwall wrapping around a tot-lot and separate seating areas. Decorative tile, colorful play equipment, fossil imprints in the patio all under a large red umbrella helps create this unique space. The other park at the opposing end is the Montecito garden. This space has a grand fireplace with a Moorish inspired iron shade structure with retractable canvas. The patio space includes an outdoor kitchen, making it ideal for al fresco dining. An enclosed working garden is also integrated into the park. Large heritage trees are planted throughout to provide the established estate look that is so typical of Montecito.
Santa Barbara’s building layout was established to create separate, more intimate courtyards as offshoots from the main State Street spine. These courtyards were all designed to be unique oases with dramatically different planting concepts to create equally diverse moods and appeal such as: sage garden, azalea garden, palm garden, succulent garden, fern garden, touch garden, edible garden, scented garden and a moon garden.
David Thorne Landscape Architect
The goal of this landscape renovation was easy outdoor entertaining with a variety of programmatic elements gracefully arranged in a small space. Our design crafted spaces for a lap pool, fireside lounge, kitchen and bar, heated cabana for dining, children’s play space, and an extensive rose garden.

ORIJIN STONE, LLC
The main design goal of this Northern European country style home was to use traditional, authentic materials that would have been used ages ago. ORIJIN STONE premium stone was selected as one such material, taking the main stage throughout key living areas including the custom hand carved Alder™ Limestone fireplace in the living room, as well as the master bedroom Alder fireplace surround, the Greydon™ Sandstone cobbles used for flooring in the den, porch and dining room as well as the front walk, and for the Greydon Sandstone paving & treads forming the front entrance steps and landing, throughout the garden walkways and patios and surrounding the beautiful pool. This home was designed and built to withstand both trends and time, a true & charming heirloom estate.

In the spring and fall the modern faux stone planters are filled with colorful annuals. In the summer they function as petite culinary gardens, with no bending or weeding required.
Chosen for their distinctive bark and large thick leaves, the London Plane Trees provide privacy. To keep them from outgrowing the space the client has committed to a long-term pruning regimen to be performed by a qualified arborist
Albatross Pools
Surrounded by travertine tiles in a French pattern, the plunge pool measures 5.0m x 3.0m with full width steps and benches in the shallows. The lush formal English garden complements the black-like pool interior, creating a classic and timeless beautiful aesthetic to be admired and enjoyed year round.

Natures Best Landscapes
Arriving Home from a holiday to far North QLD, the clients were inspired to make grand changes to their humble garden. They requested a design that envoked the atmosphere of a natural free form setting with billabong pool making them feel as though they were always on vacation.
The clients were so committed to making this vision a reality that they bought the block next door to accommodate their oasis away from home. Covering an area of 500sqm of land, the spirit of the outback is well represented in the landscape design. From its lush plants to its alluring central spectacular waterfall pool, the sense of a natural environment is obvious. Several rock layered walls and a blue stone bench were incorporated into the layout to provide a tranquil setting to surround the pool. The client also wanted a fully equipped pool house which was built adjacent to the end of the pool and mirrored a version of a beautiful old blue stone hut.
As with any complete makeover, this unique project presented a major challenge from a design and construction point of view. Natures best Landscapes introduced many raised garden beds with stone walling to combat the various level changes throughout. The stand out feature and core of the design is the waterfall fresh water pool which relies on plants to filter the water. The large boulders which made the waterfall, proved a challenge. Due to the size and weight of stones, we had to sling them in with the excuvator and chains in order to build the structure. To allow for the fall we had to do a three metre site cut. The water source appears to be a part of its natural surroundings, with curves and irregularities creating a serene and natural appearance.
Once we built the main features including the rock walls and recycled iron bark timber jetty over the side of the pool, we had to marry the existing house garden with new landscape. This was done by placing random sawn blue stone paving acting as stepping stones. Also pebbles were used to create that natural setting feel.
The project required many trades including a builder, the pool company and the landscapers to work together to produce the stunning outcome. This was a challenge in itself but with numerous site meetings and communication we were able to complete the job within timelines.
The natural swimming pool uses aquatic plants instead of harmful chemicals and complicated mechanical filtering systems. The plants enrich the pool with oxygen, support beneficial bacteria that consume debris and potentially harmful organisms, and give habitat to frogs, dragonflies and other water life. Underneath the jetty are large sponge filters that collect debris through a skimmer which also aid in the filtering system. The result is a beautiful, ecologically diverse system that relies heavily on the plants.
Some of the larger plantings surrounding the pool consist of Japanese maples, camellia sasanqua’s, and weeping cherry feature tree. Smaller plants include nandina domestica and Pratia ground cover in between stepping stones to soften the look. All low maintenance with a fully automated irrigation system installed.
The completed project is a tiered masterpiece that brings a sense of simplicity and tranquillity to what is now an urban oasis. The clients were absolutely delighted when their vacation vision became a reality and they enjoy explaining to their friends how the pool system is filtered by the oxygenating plants.

Willistown Country Estate by Allan Summers of Rodney Robinson Landscape Architects, Inc.
Situated on 40 acres, this estate is a harmonious composition of the regional vocabulary of the Brandywine Valley, from gentle hills of pastureland and wood lots, to stream valleys, stone walls, and fences. The landscape architects carefully placed the house and outbuildings, entry drive, fences, orchard, swimming pool, and gardens to take advantage of sunlight and the expansive views. The residence, designed by architect John Milner, is inspired by the vernacular fieldstone farmhouses that can be seen throughout the area. At the rear, a terrace and naturalized water feature transition between the house and elegant pool garden beyond. The lush plantings are designed in broad sweeps sympathetic to the scale of the surrounding landscape, juxtaposed against the garden with a more varied palette near the home’s entrance.
