Stylish Orangery in the Surrey South Downs
This stylish and substantial orangery design has effectively brought together two distinct parts of this delightful period home in the Surrey South Downs.
The brief from our client was to form a link between the house and the detached annexe, whilst at the same time creating a bright airy room which would allow an elevated view over their garden. The room was also going to be used for housing plants, especially over the winter months.
The ‘before’ photo above neatly illustrates the design challenge that needed to be overcome. Based in the South Downs National Park, care also had to be taken in relation to the 'Dark Skies Policy' which the National Park Authority has adopted within its planning process.
Instead of a single large lantern roof, three smaller lanterns were incorporated within the design, each being spaced in such a manner to allow natural light to reach all corners of the orangery.
Featuring a stepped design with a pair of French Doors, the orangery measures just under 9 metres wide by approximately 6 metres deep, giving a substantial overall floor area of around 49 square metres. The design of the window fenestration and the central feature gable all echo the original property.
To round it off, the subtle shade of Mendip Grey, from David Salisbury’s own unique colour palette, was chosen as a classic contrast to the white painted masonry, to which it adjoins.
The completed orangery has met all of the client’s requirements and the finishing touches, which they have applied, have resulted in a quite stunning room in which they can relax and enjoy the views.
