“Miriam has been a brilliant architect for us. We hired her to design a 3 bed, 2 storey extension. We thought we already knew what we wanted in terms of layout and look, but she came back with a number of really exciting ideas that transformed our fairly mundane ideas into really exciting, but affordable designs. We had a number of difficulties with planning, none of them Miriam's fault, causing her to have to revise key details without losing the essence of what we wanted (lots of light and space). “I have known John for several years and decided to provide JPD Architecture with an opportunity to design, obtain planning permission and building regulation approval accordingly. “Andrew linked our 60s maisonette to the garages below. Here's why we hired him, and how it turned out: 1. Listening: We interviewed six (!) architects and he took most account of us, our tastes and how we live, rather than trying to foist a grand plan on us. It felt like a creative partnership not a takeover. 2. Focus on small details: Our project hinged on where to put the stairs. Andrew took us to another project, where he'd included an upstairs bathroom in a tiny cottage by moving the stairs. He'd thought it through in fine detail and it worked. 3. Sensitive to the architecture of the house, bringing back its mid-century vibe. 4. Budget conscious: Andrew worked with us to bring down costs. 5. “We bought a house designed by Rupert Davison at the beginning of the C20th and we wanted to create more bedrooms, bathrooms and living space. We needed someone who would be sympathetic to the original design, at the same time sensitive to our requirements. Gelarah Hirst listened to our needs and after agreeing the design, she consulted with us each step of the way. One of the lovely spaces she created for us was the sun room. The en suite bedrooms challenging but Gelarah found room for six double en-suites. the attic space was converted to en-suite bedroom and sitting room, a space which is filled with light most days. Whenever we have guests, which is often, we always have wonderful comments.”
