“I needed to add a room addition onto my home that would be approximately 12’x16’ and would have its own door leading to the outside and its own ac/heating unit. After spending some time on Angie’s List I came up with three general contractors. The first company sent out a salesman with a personality bigger than life and I enjoyed myself immensely and believed everything he said and was looking forward to getting his company’s bid. The second general contractor, Luster Custom Homes, had the owner himself come out for the initial meeting and bid process. The minute Tanner Luster walked through the door I knew I had just entered another world. Everything about Tanner lends itself towards credibility and excellence and I had my fingers crossed that he would not disappoint when the bid was formally delivered. Both companies stated the same approximate verbal figure, about $40,000. Now here’s the difference, the first company came back at me with a formal bid of $65,000! They had no workup or breakout. They simply handed me a sheet that said $65,000. I wasn’t going to know what I was paying what for, zero, zip, nothing. I was totally blown away and not in a good way. Luster Custom Homes came in at approximately $38,000 slightly lower than what he had stated. And when he physically handed me the bid it was in perfect format with all of the figures broken down into their perspective sections. I was impressed and thrilled and I’ve not been disappointed, not one bit, in all the months we’ve worked together on this project. As an aside, the third general that I had contacted told me that in order to receive a formal bid from them they would require a small down payment. I immediately cut them from the bid process. These, by the way, at that time, were the top three general contractors on Angie’s List. Here’s the deal, Luster Custom Homes has a mission statement that they believe in. It’s built into the philosophy of the company and everyone that works there knows it and represents it well. Their mission is to make the customer happy and to deliver a remodel job that is as fine a product as a new home build out. After working on this project, my first I might add, I can’t tell you how much I’ve come to appreciate this because with them it’s not just words, they simply make it happen right before your eyes. Did things go wrong, yes, quite honestly every now and then something did go wrong. I’ve discovered, and I say this with humor, that construction oftentimes is finding a solution to a problem you didn’t know you had. You have to be creative and you are always problem solving and oftentimes it’s a collaborative effort. Did I have to freak out over it, no, because I knew that I had a general that had my back covered and the subs that work with them know, if they know nothing else, Luster Custom Homes customers have to be happy. And I was! I loved my first superintendent, Greg, who left two-thirds into the project to move out of state. And while I missed working with him on the project I then had the total pleasure of meeting and working with Jared Banner. What can I tell you? This man is just a smile. When he walks onto a project he just makes things happen. Smart, capable, energetic and amazingly honest he’s one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. You email him at 9 a.m. or 10:30 p.m. or even while he’s on vacation and I’ll guarantee you that unless he’s dead you are going to get a really quick response. I feel blessed. While I’ve spoken to so many homeowners who have had such horror stories to tell and I was so committed to not having one of “those” experiences, I was fortunate enough to pick the right general contractor who let me have an enjoyable, if not at times downright fun experience, and he and the men that represent him made my dream come true.
