Stairs

I have stairs that are carpeted and is painted underneath after you turn the corner it is carpeted with wood on one end but are painted under the runner. I want to get rid of the carpet and just have wood. I need access to the upstairs during the change and want to avoid sanding in the house. Any ideas?

Your stairs with 100% overlay with carpet is going to be a yellow pine. I don't think finishing this species of wood is going to give you the look you want. You will need to remove and replace with a oak/your choice tread. The tread will be glued down with constriction adhesive, will take some work getting them up. Your first pic are you sure that is not end caps? Typically when this is done they use oak end caps, so the oak will not run all the way thru, just a few inches past the carpet. Little confused why they would spend the time to paint if it was getting covered up, wasted labor. Wonder if what you are seeing is overpay from when they sprayed your home. Anyway hope all works out for you.

You can remove the paint with stripper - I like the orange citrus one. However, you will need to sand a little, usually even after stripper. You can work on every other step so you can still get up and down, or half the steps - divided up the middle - at a time. I started out with every other one, but the kids and dogs had trouble with that so moved to divided in half until the final coats of poly. Then I did one step at a time, or two -every other. Took me a couple of months, but only worked on them for a short time every day once the stairs were stripped. I could have done it much faster if kids and dogs weren't using the stairs all day.

There must be some type of an overlay the could be put down relatively quick.

This is the wall of my living room leading up to the stairs. We would like to paint a wall - hubby thinks wall with painting and chimney which protrudes from the wall. I'm inclined to think the back wall on either side of the chimney (more work). What do you think - we do have high ceilings... Now the second problem is the staircase...we will varnish the stairs the same colour as the parquet BUT...the banisters and upright were painted white at some point partially sanded and now look strange. I want to paint them because there is a lot of crevices and I think it will be too much work to sand it all done. We are leaning towards a darker colour - in the picture it looks black but in fact it's a a dark shade of blue. I was also thinking of F&Bs "Black Blue". I would like any and all suggestions on where to paint and colour ideas. Thanks so much!

Hello ! Les peintures en blanc sont faites. (Laurent a profité de la présence de mamie le WE dernier pour finir) Ci-dessous les dernières photos. Nous allons maintenant faire une grosse pause pour profiter d'Ophélie. A dans quelques mois pour la suite de la déco ! On espère avoir bouclé les garde corps pour les premiers pas de notre petite puce ;) NB: La porte d'entrée côté extérieur est bleu nuit. La dénomination exacte est : "Gris Canon SW209F".

Check out Retro-Tread on Lowes.com. You should be able to take the carpet off and cut the existing tread nosing off and replace with the Retro-Tread, which would require no sanding.

Jeff H. I believe you are correct they are oak end caps . How do you feel about some of the other things mentioned like retro tread?

Well they would work where you have skirt boards on both sides. As far as the one side exposed may be trickier. I read the info on line but never could determine the material thickness. The end caps will be 3/4" so if you was to leave them and take the retro fit and butt to them it would look out of place. You will have the seam where they butt together and also you will never be able to match the grain. You have 2 stair cases so what ever you do too one you have to do the same to the other to keep the rise within code 3/8" max. I have always believed in doing thing right the first time. May cost more up front, tear out, install new treads should you move fwd with the project. It's kinda a trick bag.
