What style to portray?

This is the house we have just bought. I feel the house is beautiful as is, but painting the front door and maybe adding shutters would bring it more life. I was thinking black door and a taupe-y grey shutter. Maybe a black shingle roof when it needs replaced. There are plantation shutters that are visible from the outside up close that match the house color. We are removing the tree blocking the windows and would love to change the landscaping to more our style, i.e. Blue spruce trees and prairie grasses in the future. The inside will be industrial farm house style. What are your thoughts?

    Alisha - I'd stick with a more simple farmhouse form based on what you are doing inside and some of the built in things outside.

    The creamy warm white exterior is perfect for that. I wouldn't add timber to the white house or do a black roof either - you have a lot of roof with that pitch and black is going to be very heavy. If and when you need to do a new roof - a metal roof would advance that farmhouse look (though they aren't terribly hail friendly) or stick with a mid tone so you don't give it a big dark "hat." A mid tone would be my roof advice. Yes, this did originally want to be a modern french country exterior, but it has vents in the largest gable and transom windows in the next spot - don't think gable brackets are wise. Same challenges with shutters .. . Because you can't do shutters in the upper gable (no room) or on the transom windows on the left upper, I think I would avoid them altogether - you don't want to call attention here to the discontinuity or the window form. The windows here are kind of modern since they don't have muntins, and I would stick with clean lines to go with them. Imagine if you painted your window trim in contrast, how it would make it even more modern looking which is what you don't want.

    I can see doing some of that luscious creamy white paint on all the trim and sidelights around the front door so that only the door itself gets a color - and a color you like. I'm seeing bronze or black industrial barn lights and a warmer charcoal like bm kendall charcoal on the front door. Those adjustments, along with your new landscape will make you smile. You might add white painted wood braces under the upper gable - that curvy portico arch over the front door is sweet. . .can't see that part of the architecture from here. LOOVE your brick pop pattern . .yummy.

    I'm originally from Oklahoma, and think the prairie grasses are going to add so much ... I see the stone walls in the back .. can see you do linear forms of grasses on the terrace above that follow the wall to emphasize its form (and stop people from walking over it/ direct them as to where to walk over)

    Before you cut down the tree in the "courtyard," start by lacing it out by 1/3. It may be concealing the more modern form of the windows / giving some privacy to the staircase without needing curtains or blinds. It appears to be a crepe myrtle or some other flowering shrub (small tree form) so wait until spring and you see what color it adds there if it was just as tall but about 1/2 as bushy ... lace it out twice and you might love it. Mature landscape is one of the great things about an existing home - love that sycamore in the back! You could add braces between the posts and "roof" on your pergola to give it more country feel - see the options at prowoodmarket.com . . . (they carry gable brackets too)
